Teenage pop star Justin Bieber accused of fathering baby boy

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 12:44 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) -- A 20-year-old woman from California is accusing teenage pop star Justin Bieber of being the father of her child, media reports said on late Tuesday. Bieber has denied the allegations.

The woman, identified as Mariah Yeater, has filed a complaint in a Los Angeles court in which she alleges that 17-year-old Bieber is the father of her 3-month-old baby boy, according to Radar Online.

Court documents, which were obtained by the website's sister publication Star Magazine, reveal that Yeater is demanding Bieber to take paternity tests to confirm his alleged involvement and asks for him "to provide adequate support for my baby."

Yeater claims to have had a sexual encounter with Bieber after his October 25, 2010 concert, which took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. In addition, Yeater, who was 19 years old at the time, claims that Bieber told her it was his "first time."

"After waiting for a short period of time with several young women, Justin Bieber appeared and engaged me in conversation," Yeater stated in the lawsuit, as quoted by the media outlet. "Immediately, it was obvious that we were mutually attracted to one another, and we began to kiss. Shortly thereafter, Justin Bieber suggested that I go with him to a private place where we could be alone."

The lawsuit continues, adding that after walking to a private area, Bieber told her he wanted to "make love" to her and that it would be his "first time." Yeater continues by stating that they went into a bathroom to be alone where Bieber's personality "changed drastically" as he allegedly began touching her and repeatedly said he wanted to "f--k the sh-t out of me."

"At the time I asked him to put a condom [on] for protection," she states, "but he insisted that he did not want to." Yeater said Bieber stripped her naked and then had sex, detailing that she was on top of a shelf and that the sex was "brief, lasting approximately 30 seconds."

Bieber's representatives have strongly denied the accusations, stating that, "while we haven't yet seen the lawsuit, it's sad that someone would fabricate malicious, defamatory, and demonstrably false claims. We will vigorously pursue all available legal remedies to defend and protect Justin against these allegations."

A court hearing is scheduled for December 15.

Passenger plane makes spectacular crash-landing in Warsaw

Posted: 01 Nov 2011 09:52 PM PDT

WARSAW, POLAND (BNO NEWS) -- An LOT Polish Airlines passenger plane carrying more than 200 people made an emergency landing in Warsaw on early Tuesday afternoon, officials said. There were no injuries.

The pilot of LOT flight 016, a Boeing 767 flying from Newark in the United States to Warsaw, reported an emergency at around 1.40 p.m. local time when it was discovered the plane's landing gear was malfunctioning.

The pilot and co-pilot circled Warsaw Chopin Airport as they attempted to lower the landing gear. An hour later, after their efforts proved unsuccessful, the pilots carried out an emergency landing after a special fire-proof foam was placed on the runway.

With no wheels, the pilots were able to land the aircraft, sliding on the runway on the plane's 'belly'. Thick smoke and sparks could be seen flying from the aircraft, but no fire broke out.

None of the 220 passengers and 11 crew members were reported injured, although they were taken to medical facilities at the airport where a support team and psychologists took care of them.

"Passengers of flight LO 016 are currently being released after medical examination and a brief police interview," the airline said in a brief statement. "If required, they will be offered meals and accommodation. LOT's dedicated Support Team is on site and available to offer psychological help and any other support."

Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski expressed gratitude toward the pilots and crew members of the flight after the emergency landing. He said he had personally spoken with the pilot, thanking him and the crew, while describing the passengers as 'very brave.'

Officials said Warsaw Chopin Airport will remain closed until at least 8 a.m. local time on Wednesday as the incident is being investigated.

UNICEF calls for funding to prevent North Korean food crisis

Posted: 01 Nov 2011 07:43 PM PDT

NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) -- The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) on Tuesday called for more funding to assist millions of people in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK or North Korea) who are at risk of becoming severely malnourished.

The agency, which has been working in the DPRK for over 25 years, said that children and women are particularly affected. UNICEF has received only $4.6 million out of the $20.4 million it requested for its emergency response this year.

"If the funding does not arrive and we are unable to keep up our nutrition programs to treat those children who are severely malnourished, these children will suffer irreversible consequences on their growth and development capacity," Bijaya Rajbhandari, UNICEF Representative in DPRK, said.

During her recent visit to the DPRK, UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos warned that the country cannot feed its people for the "foreseeable future." She also urged the world to step up its humanitarian support for an estimated six million people who now depend on food aid.

According to UNICEF reports, over a quarter of women in DPRK aged 15 to 49 are under-nourished. This puts them at greater risk of delivering infants with low birth weight, which can leave them at higher risk of death or disease.

Death toll in Accra floods rises to 14

Posted: 01 Nov 2011 07:40 PM PDT

ACCRA (BNO NEWS) -- The death toll as a result of flash floods which hit the Ghanian capital region of Accra last week has risen to at least fourteen, the country's National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) said on Tuesday.

The flooding began on late Tuesday evening last week when heavy rainfall hit large parts of the Greater Accra Region which includes the cities of Accra and Tema. Water reached window levels in some areas as residents desperately tried to save their property.

NADMO said that it has so far recorded a total of 43,385 affected and displaced people, mainly in the Greater Accra Region. Kofi Portuphy, the agency's coordinator, said the death tool stood at fourteen as of Tuesday, including eight men and six women.

Portuphy said the number of affected people was very alarming, adding that more than 480 farmers had their farms completely destroyed in the Volta Region. He explained that 12 teams have already been dispatched to assist the regional, district and zonal rapid assessment efforts in the distribution of relief items.

Accra is in a low-lying area and frequently experiences floods during the rainy season which runs from July through November. Climate experts believe the entire region could be permanently underwater within the next 80 years.

Israel to expedite settlement construction after UNESCO vote

Posted: 01 Nov 2011 07:29 PM PDT

JERUSALEM (BNO NEWS) -- Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has ordered that the construction of 2,000 housing units in the West Bank and East Jerusalem be accelerated, the Prime Minister's office said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today (Tuesday) directed that the construction of apartments in Jerusalem, in the Etzion Bloc and in Maaleh Adumim, be accelerated," the statement said. "These are thousands of residential units, in areas that will, under any future agreement, remain part of Israel."

The decision came after Netanyahu convened a meeting with eight ministers to discuss possible sanctions against the Palestinian National Authority in response to its membership of the United Nations cultural agency UNESCO. The ministers also decided to suspend the transfer of tax money which Israel collected for the Palestinian Authority in October.

Moreover, the eight ministers also decided not to allow any UNESCO missions into Israel and to examine the possibility of revoking the VIP status of senior Palestinian officials which allows them to pass through checkpoints.

On Monday, the U.S. government announced it has been forced to cut all funding to UNESCO after it voted to grant full membership to Palestine. The motion to admit the Palestinians was passed at a UNESCO meeting in Paris with 107 votes in favor of admission, 14 votes against and 52 abstentions.

Admission to UNESCO for states which are not members of the United Nations requires a recommendation by the organization's executive committee and a two thirds majority vote in favor by member states. Abstentions are not considered to be votes and no member state has veto powers.

Among the countries which voted against admission were Israel, the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia and Germany. Brazil, Russia, China, India, South Africa, Belgium and France were among the countries which voted in favor while the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan were among those who abstained.

Before Palestine will become a full member, it must sign and ratify UNESCO's constitution which is open for signature in the archives of the British government in London. Upon signature, Palestine will become UNESCO's 195th member state.

The move to admit Palestine to UNESCO is part of a broader campaign by Palestine to get recognition as a state by the United Nations. On September 23, Palestine filed a request for a full UN membership even though the United States is likely to veto this.

About 120 out of 193 countries have currently recognized the State of Palestine and those are seen as possible supporters if the UN General Assembly votes on the issue. If the UN Security Council resolution to recognize Palestine is approved, Palestine would become the 194th member of the United Nations.
