Report: U.S. woman drops paternity lawsuit against Justin Bieber Posted: 16 Nov 2011 02:41 AM PST LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) -- A California woman who accused teenage pop star Justin Bieber of being the father of her baby has dropped the paternity lawsuit she filed in a Los Angeles court earlier this month, TMZ.com reported on Wednesday. The gossip and entertainment news website reported that the paternity lawsuit filed by 20-year-old Mariah Yeater was quietly dismissed last week. TMZ.com also said that her two lawyers, Lance Rogers and Matt Pare, have both withdrawn themselves from the case. The news comes about 1.5 week after 17-year-old Bieber agreed to take a DNA test at a laboratory later this month to prove he is not the father of Yeater's 3-month-old baby boy. Bieber's lawyer Howard Weitzman had also planned to sue Yeater for making 'phony' and 'hurtful' allegations. In the lawsuit which has now been dropped, Yeater claimed to have had a sexual encounter with Bieber after his October 25, 2010, concert at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Yeater was 19 at the time while Bieber was 16, which means it would have been illegal under state law for her to have sex with Bieber. "After waiting for a short period of time with several young women, Justin Bieber appeared and engaged me in conversation," Yeater stated in the lawsuit. "Immediately, it was obvious that we were mutually attracted to one another, and we began to kiss. Shortly thereafter, Justin Bieber suggested that I go with him to a private place where we could be alone." The lawsuit continued, adding that after walking to a private area, Bieber told her he wanted to "make love" to her and that it would be his "first time." Yeater alleged that they then went into a bathroom to be alone where Bieber's personality "changed drastically" as he allegedly began touching her and repeatedly said he wanted to "f--k the sh-t out of me." "At the time I asked him to put a condom [on] for protection," she stated, "but he insisted that he did not want to." Yeater said Bieber stripped her naked and then had sex with her, detailing that she was on top of a shelf and that the sex was "brief, lasting approximately 30 seconds." After news about the lawsuit broke, Bieber's representatives immediately denied the allegations. "It is sad that someone would fabricate malicious, defamatory, and demonstrably false claims. We will vigorously pursue all available legal remedies to defend and protect Justin against these allegations." On November 5, Bieber himself first responded to Yeater's claims. "I'd just like to say that basically none of those allegations are true, and I know that I'm going to be a target but I'm never going to be a victim, you know," he told NBC's TODAY show. He added: "I just think it's crazy because every night after the show, I've gone right from the stage right to my car so, it's crazy that some people would make up such false allegations but, to set the record straight, none of it is true." When asked if Bieber ever met Yeater, he said: "[I] never met the woman." (Copyright 2011 by BNO News B.V. All rights reserved. Info: sales@bnonews.com.) |
Israeli military warns of new military offensive in Gaza Posted: 16 Nov 2011 02:19 AM PST JERUSALEM (BNO NEWS) -- Israel's military chief of staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz on Tuesday warned that a new, large-scale military operation against Gaza is increasingly likely amid continuing rocket attacks by Palestinian militants. Gantz made the statement on Tuesday during a closed meeting of Parliament's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. A summary of his assessment and remarks was released by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Wednesday morning. "Our deterrence over Hamas is still high but we cannot continue with one round after another," the General told the Committee. "We have to go into action operationally, it is approaching. But we will not be provoked to do so; it will be premeditated and organized." Although any large-scale operation against Gaza would have to be authorized by the government, Gantz' remarks and assessment of the situation are an important indicator that Israel is expecting another armed conflict against Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip. "For the next clash we will need to shorten the duration of the fighting as much as possible," Gantz explained. "The speed must depend on high quality intelligence and a fast pace of operational activity, which is why we must maintain readiness and preserve the human resources in the IDF. Without it, we might affect the progress we've made in the past four years." In the winter of 2008-2009, Israel launched a surprise attack on the Gaza Strip which marked the beginning of a three-week military conflict between Israel and Hamas, killing nearly 1,500 people and leaving thousands more injured and displaced. Israel stated its aim was to stop rocket fire from and arms import into Gaza. However, while most rockets cause no damage or casualties, the attacks from Gaza have continued. This year alone, Palestinian militants have fired more than 600 rockets and mortar shells into southern Israel, according to IDF figures. In late October, a 56-year-old Israeli man was killed when he was hit by shrapnel from a Grad rocket which hit his car. Israeli aircraft frequently carry out airstrikes in the Gaza Strip in response to those attacks. On early Monday morning, a Hamas police officer was killed and four people were injured when the Israeli Air Force struck a building in the al-Sudaniya area in the northern Gaza Strip. NASA posts job ad for new group of astronauts Posted: 16 Nov 2011 01:01 AM PST HOUSTON (BNO NEWS) -- Frequent travel may be required for a job ad posted online by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Tuesday. The agency is looking for a new group of astronauts for its future spaceflights. From Tuesday afternoon until January 27, 2012, qualified U.S. citizens can submit their applications through the federal government's USAJobs.gov website. Those selected will eventually travel aboard the Russian Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS) and, later, on NASA's new spacecraft. "For 50 years, American astronauts have led the exploration of our solar system," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said. "Today we are getting a glimpse of why that will remain true for the next half-century. Make no mistake about it, human space flight is alive and well at NASA." The agency said those selected will be among the first to pioneer a new generation of commercial launch vehicles and travel aboard a new heavy-lift rocket to distant destinations in deep space. It is the first time ever that U.S. citizen can apply so easily to become an astronaut, which is a dream for many. Qualifications for the job include a bachelor's degree in engineering, science or math and three years of relevant professional experience. NASA said successful applicants frequently have significant qualifications in engineering or science or extensive experience flying high-performance jet aircraft. Educators teaching kindergarten through 12th grade with these minimum degree requirements also are encouraged to apply. According to the job ad on USAJobs.gov, the salaries for the astronauts range between $64,724 to $141,715 per year. It says candidates must undergo drug-testing and pass a pre-employment medical examination. "Frequent travel may be required," it notes. NASA said the applicants will be evaluated by an Astronaut Rating Panel next year based on the academic and work experience qualification requirements. Eligible candidates will be placed in qualified and highly-qualified categories, after which highly-qualified applicants will be evaluated by an Astronaut Selection Board. Following the evaluations, the best qualified applicants will be interviewed by NASA. Officials will then select the astronauts and announce the final selection in 2013, after which training will begin during the summer. (Copyright 2011 by BNO News B.V. All rights reserved. Eight people, including a young child, were injured in the shooting. The attack happened when two men opened fire on a bus in the eastern province of Van, which is still recovering from a powerful earthquake which struck the region last month and left more than 600 people killed. The bus was en-route to Syria with 40 passengers on board. According to the Hurriyet Daily News website, the gunmen had initially signaled the bus driver to stop. However, the bus driver instead sped away at high speed to a nearby police station as the gunmen opened fire on the vehicle. Haitian government plane makes emergency landing in Cuba Posted: 16 Nov 2011 12:18 AM PST HAVANA, CUBA (BNO NEWS) -- A Haitian government plane carrying several officials made an emergency landing in Cuba on Tuesday, local media reported on Wednesday. There were no injuries. The turboprop aircraft was carrying 19 Haitian government officials when a problem within the aircraft's air conditioning wiring forced the pilot to make an emergency landing as a safety precaution. Damian Merlo, a spokesman for Haitian President Michel Martelly, told the Haiti Libre website that the aircraft landed safely. The Haitian plane was flying to Cuba to prepare for Martelly's official visit to the country from Tuesday to Thursday. He arrived in Cuba shortly after the incident. Upon his arrival, Martelly said it was a "pleasure" and "honor" to visit Haiti's "brother country" of Cuba. On Saturday, a Haitian government helicopter carrying a number of senior officials narrowly avoided several large trees amid thick fog and made an emergency landing in a crop field. The group, which was returning to the country's capital of Port-au-Prince following a meeting with Martelly, was rescued 15 minutes later by national police. Among the senior officials on the helicopter were Prime Minister Garry Conille, Interior Minister of Territorial Collectivities and National Defense Thierry Mayard-Paul and Minister of Foreign and Religious Affairs Laurent Lamothe. None of them were injured. (Copyright 2011 by BNO News B.V. All rights reserved. Info: sales@bnonews.com.) |
