Floods in southern Sri Lanka kill 8 Posted: 25 Nov 2011 03:11 PM PST COLOMBO (BNO NEWS) -- At least eight people have been killed and dozens more have been injured after strong winds and heavy rainfall hit Sri Lanka on Thursday, local media reported on Friday. Gale-force winds ripped through several places in the southern districts of Matara and Galle, damaging more than 1,000 houses. An official with the Disaster Management Center (DMC) said at least eight people had been killed while some 50 others have been injured, the Sunday Times reported. DMC Additional Director Pradeep Koddippili said at least four fishermen who had gone out to sea on Thursday night were confirmed to be among those killed. Another woman was crushed under a massive tree while the other victims are believed to have been killed when their homes collapsed. In the Matara district alone, more than 5,300 people were left displaced by the severe weather. Many areas remained without power on Friday as the severe weather continued, hampering rescue efforts to find a number of missing fishermen. The Department of Meteorology said that winds packing speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour (43 miles per hour) are set to hit the region from Friday night into Saturday, but ruled out cyclone conditions. Singer George Michael suffering from severe pneumonia, cancels UK tour Posted: 25 Nov 2011 12:10 PM PST VIENNA (BNO NEWS) -- Singer George Michael is being treated for severe pneumonia at a hospital in Vienna and has been forced to cancel all of his upcoming concerts, his publicist said on late Friday afternoon. Michael was hospitalized in the intensive care unit of Vienna General Hospital on Monday after he fell ill in his suite at a hotel in the Austrian capital. There are conflicting reports about the severity of Michael's condition, with the Vienna Times reporting earlier on Friday that his condition had worsened overnight. "George Michael has severe community acquired pneumonia and is being treated as an inpatient," Prof. Dr. Christoph Zielinski, Chairman of the hospital's Department of Medicine, and Prof. Dr. Thomas Staudinger, Specialist in Internal Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine, said in a joint statement on Friday. "His condition has stabilized and he is responding to treatment." Michael's publicist said any other speculation regarding his illness is 'unfounded and untrue.' "He is receiving excellent medical care; he is responding to treatment and slowly improving," his publicist said. "To ensure his complete well-being, George Michael's doctors have advised that he cannot perform the rest of his Symphonica tour and that he instead takes a full and complete rest." Michael had planned fourteen concerts across the United Kingdom between this weekend and December 19. After he fell ill on Monday, the singer also canceled his concerts in Vienna and Strasbourg in France. Zielinski and Staudinger said the time needed for Michael to recover 'cannot be estimated' at this time. "He will not be able to perform the rest of the tour," they said. "Besides medical treatment, complete rest and peace and quiet are mandatory." The publicist said discussions and preparations are under way to reschedule the UK concerts and asked ticket holders to retain their tickets. "George was very much looking forward to bringing his tour back home and performing for his loyal and dedicated UK fan base," the publicist said. The 48-year-old British musician is one of the world's best-selling music artists and rose to fame in the 1980s when he formed the pop duo 'Wham!' with his friend Andrew Ridgeley. He was also forced to cancel a concert in London in late October due to a viral infection. (Copyright 2011 by BNO News B.V. All rights reserved. Info: sales@bnonews.com.) |

China deploys 3,000 special forces in restive city Posted: 25 Nov 2011 08:49 AM PST BEIJING (BNO NEWS) -- The Chinese government has transferred more than 3,000 special police forces to the restive city of Urumqi in the country's northwest, state-run media reported on Friday. It did not specify the reasons for the massive deployment. Sources with the Urumqi Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) told the state-run Xinhua news agency that thousands of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) officers will be assigned to the Public Security Bureau in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. Xinhua said a regulatory body in the Public Security Bureau of Urumqi will be established to take charge of the overall management of the special police teams across the city. The report did not specify the reasons for the sudden deployment, but China Radio International said the officers would help to 'maintain stability' in the city. Urumqi was the scene of violent clashes between Uighur Muslims and Han Chinese in July 2009, leaving at least 197 people killed and more than 1,700 others injured. The riots were the region's worst ethnic clashes in decades and the violence only stopped when a large number of troops were deployed in the remote western region. Following the riots, China cut all communications from the region to the rest of the world, including international phone calls, text messaging, and the internet. Thousands of additional security forces have since been deployed and thousands of 'riot-proof' closed-circuit television cameras have been set up in public places in an attempt to discourage any violence or unrest. Over eight million Uighurs live in the Central Asian region of Xinjiang. A large number of Uighur are reportedly unhappy about the large migrant Han Chinese settlers, saying that they are making their interests less important and disregarding their culture.
