Despite New Pricing, 500px is Missing the Two Biggest Flickr Features Posted: 10 Apr 2012 07:33 PM PDT I’ve been thinking a bit about the 500px account changes today with their new level that’s being discussed as a competitor to Flickr Pro. While 500px offers a decent visual experience, I don’t see it being a Flickr killer. Flickr’s killer features aren’t photo display, they’re about communities and an open API. The Groups feature, with its ability to virtually congregate with other photographers around any topic imaginable, is the big deal. Flickr both has the user base to allow for these groups to form along with the galleries and discussion features that make the groups succeed. Flickr’s API means that I can get photos into and out of Flickr via hundreds (if not thousands) of applications. The painless integration with so many other services means that Flickr plays well with photography applications, Twitter clients, blog platforms, various mobile apps, and more. 500px offers very little in the way of an API, and apparently any attempts to use it are very painful. Am I way off? I don’t see the Flickr crowd which enjoys easy photo access and great communities jumping ship to 500px anytime soon… what do you think?

GoPro and Rocket Scientists: I’m in Alaska Posted: 10 Apr 2012 12:02 PM PDT Greetings from Fairbanks, Alaska! I’m here for a couple days on a trip with GoPro1 to check out some interesting science-related things. GoPro is working with Project Aether; the production team includes scientists which are rigging GoPro cameras to weather balloons. The goal is to capture amazing video & still photography from new vantage points. Over the next couple of days, I’ll be meeting the team, learning about the cameras, learning about the balloon setup, participating in balloon launches and retrieval (including a trip via dogsled), and hopefully creating some great images. I look forward to sharing what I discover. Rocket scientists and great camera gear? I’m in. Follow along with our adventures using the #GoProAlaska hashtag on Twitter.
