Lincoln County Sheriff’s Sergeant Shoots at Fleeing Suspect, No One Injured Posted: 07 May 2012 01:46 PM PDT Lincoln County Sheriff's Office News Release May 7, 2012 Lincolnton, NC – A Lincoln County Sheriff's Office Patrol Sergeant fired shots Sunday night at a fleeing suspect after officers responded to a disturbance at a residence on Frontier Lane. Sgt. Steve Grinnell and Baker District deputies were dispatched to 3919 Frontier Lane, Unit 7 around 11:45 p.m. after the Communications Center received a 911 call hang-up call where they heard screaming in the background. A white male, later identified as Jonathan Robert Pearson, 32, of Frontier Lane, came to the front door as deputies arrived on the scene. Sgt. Grinnell went to the back door and Pearson came running out and refused to stop by ignoring the officer's commands to do so. Grinnell gave chase and the suspect was holding his hand in his waistband and had something concealed in his hands. Sgt. Grinnell saw a shiny object protruding from the suspect's waist band. He commanded the man to show his hands but he pulled his left hand holding the shiny object out of the waist band and pointed it back toward the officer. Sgt. Grinnell removed his service weapon and fired two shots at the suspect but neither bullet struck the man. The officers stated because of the low light conditions, he thought the object was a weapon. The object turned out to be keys and a key fod. The suspect fell to the ground and was placed into custody. Officers discovered a self inflicted laceration on the man's arm and called for EMS to respond to the scene. The deputies stated the man was highly intoxicated and admitted he had been taking Xanax. The female victim told officers Pearson pushed her to the ground and pulled her hair while refusing to allow her to call 911. Mr. Pearson was transported to CMC-Lincoln were he received stitches for the laceration. He was then taken to the magistrate's office where he was charged with one count of Assault on a Female by a Male over 18 Years of Age, two counts of Resist, Delay, and Obstruct a Public Officer and one count of Interfering with Emergency Communication. All the charges are misdemeanors. Pearson was placed in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center under a $3,000 secured bond.
