Lincoln Theatre Guild to Preform “Grease”

Posted: 10 Jun 2012 03:31 PM PDT

STAFF REPORT

School may be out for summer, but the halls of Rydell High will be bustling with activity at the end of June.

Performers with the Lincoln Theatre Guild are bringing to the stage the popular musical, "Grease."

A cast, ranging in age from 15 to 55, has been working for months to fine-tune the gritty love story of a pristine girl whose love interest is an unlikely greaser.

Danny and Sandy — followed by their loyal gang of whacky teens — work through their issues on stage despite the ridicule and mocking of their friends.

And while the two main characters fight peer pressure likely to keep them apart, their friends face other issues that still affect teenagers today such as staying in school and the scare of an unplanned pregnancy.

The popular movie, brought to life by John Travolta and Olivia Newton John, takes a light-hearted approach to the teen issues that remain relevant today.

Comic relief throughout the play is provided by Danny and Sandy's friends who often burst into song and dance. Diane Turbyfill is directing the LTG play and her father, Barrie Howard, is the music director.

The two have paired up for several previous Lincoln Theatre Guild shows, the most recent being "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" in which Turbyfill directed her father who played the role of Big Daddy.

All of the cast come from various corners of Lincoln County and put their all into the show, according to Turbyfill. "It was so exciting to find such talented people right here in Lincoln County," she said. "They've really brought life to a show that I fell in love with as a child."

The play varies slightly from the movie, but audiences will still see kids bop around and sing, "Summer Lovin." Danny will once again get stranded at the drive in.

And a happy ending is certain because as you might've heard, "We Go Together…"

Performances of "Grease" will be June 22-24 and June 29-July 1 at the Lincoln Cultural Center. Friday and Saturday shows will be at 7 p.m., and Sunday performances will begin at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors. Tickets may be purchased at the cultural center or online at www.lincolntheatreguild.com.

When Marcus "Bubba" McDowell stepped on to the track at North Carolina A & T for the 2A State Track and Field Championships in Greensboro on May 11, he entered with poise and determination.

"I went in as the number one seed, so I was very confident," McDowell said.

400 meters and 48.72 seconds later, he walked away with gold while breaking his own school record by a half second.

Going into the 2012 track and field season, McDowell knew there were high expectations of him.

"Coach (Lonnie) Custer kept telling me that I had what it takes to win (a state title), but he also told me I had to work hard for it," McDowell said.

His effort was also good enough to place him into the top 200 runners in the nation.

But producing individual state championships is nothing new to Coach Custer or East Lincoln high School. McDowell is the sixth male to win an individual state championship in track in the 44 year history of the school. He joins Nate McCall 2000, Thomas Huntley 2006, Brad Popple 2006, Spenser Sydney 2009 and Brather Cline 2011.

But Coach Custer knew from the beginning that McDowell was an athlete with unlimited potential.

"Bubba McDowell is hands down the hardest working sprinter I have coached in my 14 years of coaching high school track," Coach Custer said. "He did the unthinkable for a sprinter this year; he asked to run the 800m at some meets to improve his 400m endurance. Our team did some crazy early season workouts, like running 600′s with weight vests on. Bubba lead by example and never complained. He knew that what we do in March has a direct effect on what we achieve in May."

But McDowell did not just win the 400m dash at the state meet; he dominated at each stage on the way to Greensboro. At the 2A west regional meet he won the 100, 200, 400 and his team won the 4×400 relay.

But it was on the gridiron where McDowell said he had his most memorial moment when representing Mustang athletics.

"The football game against West Lincoln last season (stands out). Garrett Young was passing it, we were running it. Everything was just clicking," McDowell recalls.

McDowell had 175 total yards and two scores in the 24-14 win over the Rebels.

For his career, McDowell 3447 yards on the ground with 49 touchdowns.

He was also named the Male Athlete of the Year for ELHS.

"Bubba has been an outstanding role model for all of us," said East Lincoln football coach Mike Byus. "He has never been in trouble with a single teacher and has always given his best effort. He has been a pleasure to coach and watch perform."

Coach Byus knows that McDowell will excel at the next level and will benefit the college that he attends.

"We wish him well and I know he will be successful at whatever he chooses," Byus said

McDowell eventually would like to play football and run track at a university, but for the next two seasons, he will run the pigskin for the Louisburg Hurricanes while majoring in sports management.

Even though he has left an ever-lasting impression on East Lincoln High School, he could not have done it without his teammates.

"Everyone (on the track team) worked hard, which made me work harder," he said.

Cruz’s Artwork Inspired by Native Country

Maria Cruz

By Seth Mabry

An artistic touch has ran in the family of Maria Cruz for several generations.

"I got my love for art from my grandmother," said the eighth-grade-student from Lincolnton Middle School.

But when she was told by her art teach, Sarah Dorrier, that she had been named Best of Show in the middle school category for 2012 Lincoln County Schools Student Art Show, it caught her by surprise.

"I could not believe it. I was in shock when I found out I had won," said Cruz.

Her mother was even more surprised.

"When I told my mom, she was happy too, but then she asked me, "Are you sure it is not another Maria?"

But it was official; Cruz had won with her butterfly mobile she made from aluminum foil, clear overhead sheets and rubber cement. It is now on display at Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln.

Her masterpiece was inspired by her native land of Costa Rica, which common uses a blue butterfly on their promotional logos.

"I felt like it was a representation of where I am from," she said.

Cruz has always been fascinated by butterflies and their mid-air maneuvers.

"I just love their shapes and movements. Butterflies are my favorite insects," she said.

But even Cruz's love for butterflies wasn't enough to keep her from getting discouraged with her project.

"I really wanted to just quit," she recalls. "I had trouble tracing out my wings. I felt like giving up."

But she received motivation from her art teacher which helped her stay focused.

"Mrs. Dorrier really encouraged me. She has inspired me a lot with my art," said Cruz.

Once she has completed her schooling, Cruz hopes to one day follow in her art teacher's footsteps and make a career from being an art instructor.

"I would love to be able to teach small kids to go big with art," Cruz said.
