Keep Your Style Sustainable With This Online Retailer
Friday, August 31, 2012 5:11 PMCalin Van Paris

Name: Modavanti

Quick Pitch: Modavanti is an online retailer that promotes sustainable fashion.

Genius Idea: Interactive features like "My Closet" and in-depth designer profiles function to create a community centered around eco-fashion.

Fashion forward can mean a multitude of things depending on the context. In the case of online retailer Modavanti -- which literally translates to "fashion forward" in Italian -- the phrase refers to sustainability in style.

When it comes to fashion, tracking down pieces that are both ethically sound and trendy can be a difficult feat. Modavanti allows shoppers to purchase apparel that fits their values without compromising on style. The primary goal of this venture is to take sustainable fashion out of the "green" niche and bring it to the mainstream.

The site, set to launch in September, will feature a curated collection of clothing with in-depth profiles of the designers behind the Earth friendly labels. A new designer and a capsule collection of their designs will be showcased every five days.

And because we are all addicted to online bulletin boards, Modavanti will provide a virtual closet for your purchases, aptly named "My Closet." Your closet is a space to share new brands and trends with other users, thus broadening your stylish, like-minded community.

"My Closet" also functions as a crowd funding source -- so if you desperately need that dress/bag/blouse, alert your family and friends via email and let them help you get the coveted piece into your real life closet.

AT&T to Open Apple-Style Flagship Store in Chicago
Friday, August 31, 2012 3:24 PMZoe Fox

Mobile carrier AT&T is taking a page from Apple's books, opening up a flagship retail store on Chicago's prestigious Michigan Avenue, just down the street from Apple's property.

The store, opening Saturday, will boast an 18-foot video wall, 10,000 square feel of space, and will be staffed by 40 employees. Including the smartphones and tablets you'd expect from an AT&T store, you'll be able to purchase a line of exclusive designer accessories at the Chicago store.

Customers will be in a manner familiar to Apple Store shoppers, with staff members closing sales throughout the retail space via tablet and smartphone, rather than behind a register.

Walmart Testing iPhone-Based Self Checkout System
Friday, August 31, 2012 1:46 PMEmily Price

Walmart has reportedly started testing a new iPhone-based self-checkout system. Taking a test spin first at a Walmart in Arkansas, the program would allow a customer to scan merchandise using his or her iPhone, and then pay for the items in their cart without ever having to deal with a cashier in the process..

Customers bag their purchases as they shop, and are required to stop by a self-checkout to pay for them before leaving the store, so you're not actually finalizing your purchase on your phone.

The app also allows customers to create virtual shopping lists, and see what items on their list are in stock.

According to Reuters, Walmart exclusively invited employees with iPhones to participate in a test run of the system. After launching first with those employees the store also reportedly asked its staff to extend the offer to participate to friends and family.

The company recently announced it would be adding more self-checkout lanes to Walmart and Sam's Club stores in an effort to cut costs and lower prices for customers. iPhone-based self-checkouts could be the next in that plan.

"We're continually testing new and innovative ways to serve customers and enhance the shopping experience in our stores," Walmart spokesman David Tovar told Reuters.

If one of the world's biggest retailers is successful, it could mean a change in how we do business not only at Walmart but other stores as well, helping to reduce costs for both businesses and consumers in the process.

Good News: IT Jobs Are Open and Growing
Friday, August 31, 2012 1:29 PMNextgov

While the threat of sequestration is still looming, federal IT workers in several parts of the country may take heart in the fact that IT jobs are open and growing.

This month’s issue of the Dice Report notes that IT job openings in the Washington and Baltimore area are up 7% this year. Other metropolitan areas with growth in tech jobs were Silicon Valley, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Dallas, Atlanta, Seattle and Philadelphia.

New York still led the pack in terms of the number of tech jobs available, despite the fact that open positions are down 5% this year, Dice found.

At the same time, there are several states trying to earn a top spot in the number of available tech jobs. Maryland, for example, has had nearly 6% IT job growth thus far in 2012.

"While concerns at defense firms loom regarding the fiscal cliff and its impact on future employment, defense contracting isn’t the only egg in Maryland’s basket,” the report states. “Local hospitals, biotechnology and healthcare services companies are recruiting and tech professionals with experience in that field are in demand."

Other states showing growth in IT jobs were Massachusetts, Texas, Minnesota, Oregon, Georgia, Utah, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

4 Mobile Apps to Simplify Your Job Search
Friday, August 31, 2012 7:40 AMKate Freeman

Looking for a job is undoubtably one of the most stressful hurdles in one's life. Whether you're out of a job or uncomfortable in your current position, you're looking for anything to make the hunt a little easier.

1. Job Compass

Are you hoping to cut down your morning commute with a closer office? iPhone app Job Compass [iTunes link] searches for open positions near your home, within a five-mile radius. Or if you're willing to travel or maybe even relocate for the right job, you can search up to 100 miles away. The app searches more than 2 million listings to help find the job you're looking for. We played with the app -- typing in "waitress," "public relations" and "engineer" to find job lists with great variety. Job Compass includes many different industries and various levels of hierarchy within those fields. It used to be a paid app, but now it's free in the iTunes store.

2. Job Search by Indeed.com

If you've performed an online job search in the past couple years, it's likely that Indeed.com sourced some of those listings. The website is very comprehensive, with thousands of listings from company websites and job boards. To put it in perspective, the site experiences 1.5 billion job searches per month.

Indeed's app is just as useful if you're on-the-go. Although the name is bland -- Job Search-- the app has some brains. You can save and/or email your favorite job postings, and the app saves recent searches for your next visit. The app will also show you the latest jobs posted in your chosen field, since your last search. Users have complained (in the comments section of the iTunes store) that sometimes the same job listings post more than once, so be wary of that when using this free app. It's available on iTunes and Google Play.

3. JobMo

JobMo is a free app on iTunes and Google Play. Users search among millions of job listings from around the globe. Use Google Maps to find local jobs and compare salaries for your desired jobs. Find interview tips and connect with other job seekers to share job hunting techniques. If you're using an Android tablet or iPad, you can apply to jobs directly from the app. The app's users tout its usefulness and simple UI.

4. Gigwalk

Employers are still slow to take on new staff in this economy, but the contract work sector has seen a boost in activity over the past few years. What better way to get your foot in a company's door than to prove your qualifications?

The Gigwalk app is available on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. You can find temporary gigs ranging in pay from $6 to several hundred. When you do well, businesses with profiles on Gigwalk can invite you to private groups, thus broadcasting your name to others in the company. If you're hired for a Gigwalk project, employers can write reviews of your work that will live on the app, potentially enhancing your appeal to other employers.

Sure, you could sit at home and apply for jobs all day, but these job search apps let you take your search with you wherever you go. Do you think job search apps are helpful when looking for a new gig? Tell us in the comments.
