As we enter a hopeful new year, we thought it would be helpful to deliver some key items for your corporate social media strategy checklist for 2013. And, as we also enter a new year of Google changes to the ever-important search algorithm, we include a review of SEO from a social standpoint.
1. Get Internal Team on Board
Before you enter the brave new world of mobile and tablets leading the way of content consumption, quality checks all over Google, and global adoption of lightning-fast broadband with any social media strategy, you will want to make sure all key stakeholders are on board with your goals. As a key performance engine for client/customer engagement, social media activity takes into account all organizational activities that affect those relationships
Most of us know that the toys we give to kids during the holidays tend to be made in China. However, this is a fairly abstract concept; we don't really know the people on the assembly line.
German-born photographer Michael Wolf is looking to change that with his latest photo essay. The pics highlight the jarring contrast between the often grim factory workers and the cheery toys they create. (Not all workers are downcast; a few are smiling.)
Wolf heightened the dissonance with an exhibit in California that framed the worker's faces within a mosaic of colorful toys
The Middle East and North Africa are quickly becoming key sectors in the Facebook population. Since the beginning of 2012, the regions have grown 29%, adding more than 10 million new users, according to a new study
Analytics company SocialBakers dove into the Facebook usage of these new users and found the areas developing as companies are realizing the influence a social network can have on brand presence
Qatar, Libya and Iraq top the list as the fastest-moving countries within the social media market, growing in number of users more than 115%, 86% and 81% respectively. Egypt has the most Facebook users in the region, with 17 million logging into the platform. The country has had 2.5 million new users since January 2012, the highest absolute user growth of countries studied.
You'll be able to watch more than TV and films on your next cross-country flight: Virgin America is making several YouTube shows available on its in-flight entertainment system beginning Dec. 15.
It's a new distribution outlet for YouTube, whose content has never before appeared on seatback screens. It's likely to help the video network reach audiences, yes, but it's also an appealing positioning play, placing YouTube on the same level as cable and on-demand as a destination for premium quality entertainment.
Android smartphones and tablets are gaining traction with corporate users as the bring-your-own-device movement continues its progress into the heart of enterprise. Rather than fighting what would be a losing battle, savvy CIOs and their IT departments are developing their own internal Android apps for employee use. And Google is helping them out.
The Google Play store is the mother lode for Android apps like Google+ app, Google Drive app and hundreds of thousands more. On Dec. 4, the company announced on its enterprise blog that it was adding an option for businesses to create their own Google Play private channel to distribute their internal Android apps to employees.
Face it, you're going to get old someday. At that point, you'd probably like to have a nice pile of cash on hand.
We all know these are the facts, but how do you drive the point home to young people who think aging is something that happens to other people? Merrill Edge, the brokerage arm of Bank of America, is trying its best with Face Retirement, an app that gives you a glimpse of how you might appear at 47, 57, etc., all the way to 107. Once you see this aged version of yourself, you'll be in retirement-planning mode. Or maybe you'll just pass the pic around to your friends on Facebook, at which point you'll be doing some marketing for BofA.
Skip the free tote. This holiday season, Gap is giving away $25 to spend on TaskRabbit to every shopper who spends $75 or more at Gap's stores in San Francisco and New York between Dec. 8 and 24.
Think of it as a little extra help for the holidays. Vouchers, which expire Jan. 1, could be used to have a "taskrabbit" (i.e., a screened volunteer who can be commissioned to perform errands and other tasks) wrap your gifts, or prepare part of your Christmas meal.
The two companies are making it easier for shoppers to cash in by setting up an online portal where they can request help with event preparation, mailing presents and so forth. Two stores -- 890 Market St. in San Francisco, and 122 Fifth Ave. in New York City -- will have in-store "concierge desks" that will allow customers to redeem their TaskRabbit dollars on-site.
What took them so long? Next Media Animation, known for its bizarre animated versions of current events, has outdone itself with a retelling of the story John McAfee's latest exploits.
McAfee famously fled Belize for Guatemala earlier this week after becoming a "person of interest" in the death of his Belize neighbor. McAfee, who began blogging from jail in Guatemala, reportedly suffered two mild heart attacks on Thursday. Though NMA's version of event is characteristically insensitive, it does offer a flattering physical image of McAfee. The computer programmer and entrepreneur is shown fleeing Belize with his girlfriend, who he picked out of a babe drawer in his compound. In an amusing touch, after donning disguises, the couple are confronted with a McAfee window asking "Whoa.

Pepsi is offering a deal via Apple's Passbook digital wallet for a free 20 oz. Pepsi Max. However, you have to download Consmr's app and be near one of the 450 Kum & Go stores in the U.S. to take part.
Those who can take part will be alerted when they're near one of the convenience stores. Kum & Go -- which is based mostly in the Midwest -- is supporting the effort with in-store signage and point-of-sale materials
