Sapphire, which is currently used as armor on some military vehicles, would make phone displays that would be both scratch and crack-resistant, even when thrown on concrete. The mineral is harder than any other on the planet, with the exception of diamond.

According to a recent report conducted by David's Bridal, 49% of study participants would entertain the notion of Skype-ing their impending nuptials. But here's one stat that's difficult to digest: There are now more people who have mobile phones than access to clean toilets. The U.N. reported Thursday that just 4.5 billion people (of the global population of 7 billion) have access to clean toilets compared to the 6 billion people who have access to mobile phones.
