It's Friday again, and hopefully you’ve all made it through the first week of November reasonably unscathed. November…? Crazy.
If you’re a Starbucks fan, you’ve noticed they already have their red cups out, and that can mean only one thing…like it or not, the holidays are right around the corner.
First up, Thanksgiving! Then, in the blink of an eye, Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
Shopping, cooking, eating, cleaning, wrapping, more cleaning, more eating. And parties! Office Christmas parties are already being booked – and soon there will be family gatherings and neighbourhood get-togethers to attend.
Our winter holidays have some very traditional tipples associated with them: There's the standard eggnog, hot toddy, buttered rum, spiced wine, and so on.
But this holiday season – why not kick it up a notch? The following cocktails are full of festive flavor and color, and are perfect for any holiday celebration (and most can be made ‘alcohol free’).
Pumpkin Pie Martini
Oh Thanksgiving – turkey, gravy, stuffing, and pumpkin pie! This martini is literally like eating a slice of pumpkin pie, but boozier and without all the messy whipped cream. Here's a great recipe from non other than the Food Network.
Sugar Plum Dreams
Sugarplums - which fill children’s dreams at Christmas – were originally little bits of sugar coated coriander, quite literally ‘sugar and spice’. Today they are simply sugary candies with artificial plum flavoring. But, that sounds like a yummy cocktail, doesn't it? Delish has a great recipe from the Mansion Bar that you can make yourself at home.
Mistletoe Martini
The custom of kissing under the mistletoe might be Scandinavian, and wasn’t ‘a thing’ here in North America until the 1800s. Mistletoe is actually a parasitic plant that grows on other trees, absorbing water and nutrients from its host. Very romantic. Don’t try and kiss your partner under your mistletoe cocktail however, as you’re liable to just spill it all over each other. Not very romantic. There are many variations of the mistletoe martini, but this one from Buzzfeed sounds pretty tasty and easy to make. Warning: Do NOT garnish with real mistletoe!! They are poisonous!
Pecan Bourbon
For all of the Bourbon lovers out there – we didn't forget you! Apparently pecans "contribute a warm, nutty dryness" that boosts the oak and vanilla flavors in bourbon. Sounds great! And a bonus – the bourbon soaked pecans could make a great snack! Austin 360 has some tips to infuse the bourbon and some drinks to make with it…or you can just drink it on the rocks.
Ginger Fizz
If you're hosting a New Year's celebration this year and you need to find a signature cocktail, look no further! Add a bit of a twist to the midnight toast and ring in the New Year with this drink, courtesy of Epicurious.
And as always folks, if you are going to imbibe over the holidays, call a taxi.
We'd love to hear which holiday drinks are your favorites on our Facebook page or in the comments below.
