Build and Maintain Relationships Through Monitoring

Build and Maintain Relationships Through Monitoring

By Lisa Denten

relationshipsA vague and oft-referenced tip given to marketers, bloggers, and business-types alike is to build relationships.

Some people may be aiming to learn, while others are networking and growing their community, but they're all working toward a similar goal: Creating mutually beneficial relationships with people in their industry.

Whether you have a solid group established or are just beginning to identify your network, a crucial step is to invest in these relationships and show you care. Social media has given us new tools and ever-expanding circles, which can make it difficult to keep up with all the blogs and social networks out there.

Build Relationships Through Monitoring

Tools can simplify this process and make it more efficient. Here are some of the tools we suggest and use to build and maintain professional relationships:

Twitter Lists: Creating lists – either public or private – is a great way to keep up on others' professional and personal content. Instead of scrolling through your Twitter feed aimlessly, you can add Twitter accounts to a list and read content shared by those on your list instead of the social world at-large. Whether you offer a solution to someone's problem, comment on a blog post they share, or find out they play guitar, Twitter lists are an effective relationship-building hack.

RSS Feed: Add in the feeds of your favorite blogs and sites, and immediately know when they post new content. This is the RSS feed strategy we apply: Review at the beginning of every day and select three to five stories to read. If the content applies to our audience, we comment on it and share it on social. This strategy is two-fold: It helps us curate industry content to share on our social accounts and it also deepens relationships with influencers by reading, commenting, and sharing their work.

LinkedIn: If you have a LinkedIn network, take it one step further and grow those relationships on other platforms. If your connection has a blog or Twitter handle, use one of the tools above to develop a deeper relationship.

Keep In-the-Know: From a friend's promotion to a company going public, developing a monitoring routine will help you stay current on news. Find the tools you want to use to monitor and set aside a time every day or week to read and respond, and you'll find you also have topical references for business meetings and other important conversations.

Finding a strategy that works for you is most important when deciding to maintain and grow professional relationships, but the above tools will help you spend the bulk of your time engaging instead of searching for news on your clients and industry.
