FeedBlitz: Rewind the Week

FeedBlitz: Rewind the Week

By Phil Hollows

FeedBlitzToday’s FeedBlitz: Rewind the Week is going to be a little different. Instead of the usual roundup of top tech news of the week, we thought we’d bring you some video inspiration.

Bill Gates was recently asked by the smart folks at TED to choose his favorite Ted Talks (not surprisingly, his wife Melinda’s talk made the list. Good husband!).

So, we thought we would share four fantastic Ted Talks with you today – one by Bill Gates himself, and the other three chosen by Gates on his list of 13 favorites.

So, let’s start!

Bill Gates: Teachers Need Real Feedback – In this talk, Gates expounds on the value of great coaching and the importance of feedback. Something he says teachers in America get little of.

Hans Rosling: The Best Stats You’ve Ever Seen - Statistics guru Hans Rosling is called a ‘data visionary’. According to TED, “In Hans Rosling's hands, data sings. Global trends in health and economics come to vivid life. And the big picture of global development—with some surprisingly good news—snaps into sharp focus.” He also created the software behind his beautiful statistical imagery. In this talk, he debunks myths about the so-called “developing world.”

Vijay Kumar: Robots That Fly and Cooperate - Drones aren’t science fiction anymore. Neither are robots. But “…small, agile robots that swarm, sense each other, and form ad hoc teams — for construction, surveying disasters and far more.” That does sound just a tad creepy. But, from his lab at the University of Pennsylvania, robotocist Vijay Kumar and his teams study the studies the control and coordination of multi-robot formations. The possibilities for this kind of technology are endless. and fascinating.

Susan Cain: The Power of Introverts - This is a subject near and dear to my heart. There’s been a lot of chatter about introverts lately, and the unique traits and personality quirks they bring to business. You either are one (as I am), or you know or work with one. This is a valuable talk to watch, and this is why: “In a culture where being social and outgoing are prized above all else, it can be difficult, even shameful, to be an introvert. But, as Susan Cain argues in this passionate talk, introverts bring extraordinary talents and abilities to the world, and should be encouraged and celebrated.” All hail the introverts!

Enjoy your weekend, stay safe, and happy TED Talk watching!
