I Should be Flattered, Right? or, Some FeedBlitz Policy Changes

I Should be Flattered, Right? or, Some FeedBlitz Policy Changes

By Phil Hollows

OK, I’ll take it as a kind of compliment.

Over the last few days we’ve been dealing with an attempt by a very, very persistent scammer to use FeedBlitz.  I’m sure the individual concerned would prefer the term “internet marketer” or “affiliate marketer” – I strongly disagree given what I’ve seen.  It’s crud.

Clearly, they want to take advantage of our delivery excellence and the degree of trust we place in our publishers. When we yanked their list and the account, back they came within minutes to rinse and repeat under a different identity.  And so it went.

We here at FeedBlitz trust our publishers more than any other service, by having no limits on trial accounts, for example. That said, we also verify that everyone is playing by the rules. And then there are the times when some, like my little scammy friend from this weekend, who work very hard to comply with our rules, but are still clearly abusing the privilege. Yuck.

Our mission is to protect our clients and to ensure we get the mail through for you. To do that, we need to maintain our high standards and prevent abuse as best we can. To this end, we’ve spent the weekend working to overcome this new way of taking advantage of our excellent deliverability and reputation for nefarious purposes. As a result, various policies and security protocols have changed.

The good news is that the vast majority of our clients will be completely unaffected by these changes!  But, FYI, the changes I can talk about publicly include:

  • Publisher metric and complaint monitoring now runs continuously throughout the day instead of daily;
  • Some activities, such as importing lists and signing up for new accounts, will not be allowed from remote computers we feel represent too great a risk;
  • Our internal blacklist for import cross-referencing has been updated;
  • Newsflash email blasts will be much more closely scrutinized before being allowed out.

In our regression testing, we found that these updates will not affect the vast majority of FeedBlitz’s publishers. Business as usual for you all. The changes discriminate well, in other words, between legitimate, acceptable content marketing and blog updates, and messages that we wish to neither accommodate nor send.

However, in the very unlikely you find yourself unable to perform an import or a newsflash, please just contact the support team. They’ll be happy to whitelist you.
