Four Essentials Your Social Strategy Needs to Succeed

Four Essentials Your Social Strategy Needs to Succeed

Social StrategyBy Eleanor Pierce

So, you're blogging away.

You're building an audience.

You have great rapport with plenty of your readers, and now, you've even set up easy social sharing so every blog post goes straight to social.

So, are you done when it comes to social? Can you just clap the dust off your hands and call it a day?

Hardly.

There are a few more investments you'll need to make in your social media strategy to gain anything out of a social presence — and that's the point of participating, right?

There are benefits to spending your time on social media, but you can’t just ‘set it and forget it’. Which is actually a good segue to my first point about social media strategy…

Social Strategy Essentials

1.) Have Goals

Know what you want out of social media before you spend a lot of time there. If you're a blogger or a podcaster, there's a good chance your number one goal will be driving traffic back to your blog or your podcast.

But maybe your goal is different … maybe you want to use social media to connect with other bloggers. That's a legitimate goal, as well. Just be clear with yourself about what your goals are, and which are your highest priorities.

Your social strategy will be driven by (and measured against) your goals.

2.) Share Great Content

I don't just mean your blog. I'm sure your blog is great, and yes, it is definitely an excellent source of content for social media. But what else do you have to talk about and share with your audience? Are there blogs you read regularly that your audience would like?

It can't be all you all the time. Think about what other sources of content your community might find interesting, and regularly share that content on your social channels, as well.

3.) Have a Voice

You pay attention to your voice when you create your blog or your podcast. So don't overlook that voice when it comes to social. Depending on your audience and your brand, there's also a good chance it'll make sense to share some silliness or fun things you find interesting—things that might not make sense on your blog. It also makes for a nice break from all the seriousness of daily business.

For inspiration, look at how successful George Takei has become on Facebook just making people laugh with his particular sense of humor. Don't take yourself too seriously (unless, of course, your topic/brand is something deadly serious, in which case, stick to your voice and maybe avoid cat videos).

4.) Listen

You should be listening to your audience. You shouldn't just be pushing your content at them all the time. Listen to the conversations they're having. It will help you understand what they're interested in, and what their needs are. But also listen to your competitors. What are they talking about? Interested in? What issues are they dealing with?

You can learn a lot by listening—in fact, the listening part is what puts the "social" in social media. Don't overlook it.

These are a few keys to social media strategy success. What do you think? What else should be on this list?
