Fortify Friday: The Latest Information on the I-40/440 Rebuild Project Posted: 23 Jan 2015 08:12 AM PST Raleigh— As work winds down on the I-440 section of the Fortify I-40/440 Rebuild Project and continues to ramp up I-40, NCDOT and community partners are continuing to urge drivers to consider alternate ways to commute and are sharing tips to help make a change. For a full list of options, visit fortifync.com. In addition to the Triangle Transit's new Fortify express routes, carpooling, and telecommuting, some motorists may consider cycling! Cycling to work can save time and money and provide great exercise. By consulting local government websites before your ride, you can ensure that you find the more bicycle-friendly roads and paths along your route to work. If you are already an avid cyclist or are just learning, there are plenty of resources available to help you to make sure your commute to work is enjoyable and safe. GoTriangle is a partnership of public transportation agencies and organizations funded to promote commuter benefits in the Triangle. The purpose of the GoTriangle.org website is to help people easily find all the information they need to get out from behind the steering wheel and find other travel options that are safe, convenient, inexpensive, more sustainable. Watch for Me NC is a comprehensive program run by the N.C. Department of Transportation in partnership with local communities, aimed at reducing the number of pedestrians and bicyclists hit and injured in crashes with vehicles. By following these safety tips from Watch for Me NC you are destined to have a safe, healthy, and fun daily ride to work. • Wear a helmet. It could save your life. • Use a light and reflectors when bicycling at night, and be as visible as possible. • Ride in the direction of traffic. Drivers may not be looking for you if you are riding the wrong way. • Obey all signs and signals. This includes stopping at stop signs and red lights. • Use all of your senses – watch and listen for cars, particularly at intersections and drive ways. • Avoid distractions such as listening to headphones or answering phones when riding. Project Update: Motorists traveling the I-440 West section of the Fortify I-40/440 Rebuild project may have noticed that, in certain segments, three lanes are now open to traffic. And if the weather cooperates over the weekend, crews will continue to open additional three-lane stretches. As of today, the three-lane pattern is now in effect on I-440 West from the Poole Road off ramp to the end of the project near Crabtree Creek. Meanwhile, crews continue to work on the I-440 East portion of the project, which is expected to open a few weeks after the three-lane traffic pattern is in operation on the west side. A quick note: Even though the third travel lane will soon be reopened for both I-440 East and West, that doesn't mean work there is done. There is still some ramp work scheduled for February and later in the Spring, the contractor plans to put down the final layer of pavement in both directions to smooth any transitions between the roadway and bridges. They'll also put down the final lane striping. As for Fortify's I-40 section, crews are widening the shoulders, which will eventually be used as travel lanes. They are also widening bridges.
