Polar vortex redux? Bone-chilling cold to envelop Midwest, East Coast So far, the winter of 2014-15 has not been particularly cold or snowy for much of the East Coast. In fact, the winter so far has been noteworthy for its frequent ups and downs, with wild swings from mild to cold conditions every few days. But the biggest swing -- and in this case, a nosedive -- is about to take place. How does Mashable know what's going viral? Mashable built a system called Velocity, which scours the social web, collecting lots and lots of data around how people are engaging with published articles. It then pulls all of that data back to Mashable, dumps it into our own predictive engine, and predicts which articles are about to go viral.
