Bestselling Camera & Photo Equipment: October 2011

Here on this site I plan to continue a tradition started over at Picture Pundit and offer up a monthly look at the top-selling camera and photo items as measured by Amazon.com along with a few words of commentary.

While there are a few new items this month, October’s list also contains a lot of established (and really good) gear.

Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens – Nikon’s current entry-level DSLR is a great unit at a great price. For those just getting into photography with a DSLR it’s not a bad camera to start with, although one drawback is the lack of an autofocus motor in the body (which means that you’ll need lenses with autofocus motors) but other than that I can recommend this unit for someone getting started with photography.
Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 Digital Camera – Canon’s ELPH series of pocket cameras consistently deliver decent image quality with a nice set of point and shoot features in a small package. I think of the ELPH cameras as “purse cameras” because they’re the kind of thing that can be easily kept in a bag and pulled out for those photo moments.
Nikon D5100 16.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Lens – stepping up one notch from the D3100, the D5100 is Nikon’s current “one better than entry level” camera, offering a great set of features in an affordable body. Do note that like the D3100, the D5100 does not have an autofocus motor; in order to get autofocus you’ll need to make sure you have autofocus lenses.
Nikon COOLPIX L120 Digital Camera – I’m not super-familiar with this camera which is a newcomer to the bestseller lists. I am impressed by the 21x optical zoom, and as I look more at the details of this camera I see it fits into the mold of several similar previous models. While it’s not the smallest camera on the market, if you want an affordable point-and-shoot that offers a great zoom range, take a look at the L120.
Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W530 Digital Still Camera – this camera packs a quality Carl Zeiss lens into a compact camera. You won’t find a full set of manual controls or add-on options but at a price point around $100 this should create decent images.
Flip UltraHD Video Camera – White and…
Flip UltraHD Video Camera – Black – months after being discontinued, the Flip UltraHD continues to be a bestseller due to its great quality, durability, and ease of use. I have one of these units and it works great. Recommended; go ahead and pick either white or black so that you can coordinate your camera with your wardrobe.
Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens – with the range from 55-300mm this is a big zoom lens that will serve well for a casual photographer wanting to carry a minimal amount of gear or one who is watching the budget. With a maximum aperture of 4.5 this isn’t the fastest lens but the built-in vibration reduction should help compensate for the smaller aperture.
Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens – Canon’s Digital Rebel series has been popular as an entry-level camera for quite a while, and the T3i continues to offer an incredible amount of both photo and video features at a very reasonable price. I can definitely recommend the T3i kit for someone wanting to get into photography in a serious way.
Nikon COOLPIX P300 Digital Camera – the P3000 is a great mid-range compact camera that has the distinction of offering full 1080p HD video. It’s a popular camera receiving great reviews.
