Rise Up Against Poverty and Illiteracy and Other Bad Stuff Posted: 18 Oct 2011 09:00 AM PDT Poverty… is a problem. Functional illiteracy amongst teens… also a problem. And it’s a problem often seen amongst the underpivileged, who don’t have good access to reading material. Banned books… again, a problem. Enter the Uprise Books Project, a new venture that’s aiming to mash those three things together for a positive result. The goal is to get books (of the banned variety, because hey, rebellion is cool) into the hands of youth who could use some assitance in access to reading material. Though the access to books, the goal is an increase in literacy. Increasing reading skills will increase life skills; education and literacy will help that youth in his or her quest for a life outside of the world of poverty. The Uprise Books Project is on a fundraising drive; the project needs to raise (as of this writing) about $4300 by October 31st in order to meet the Kickstarter goal which will allow for the creation of the web infrastructure that will be used to launch the project and manage the book delivery process. Head over to the fundraising page and chip in a few dollars to help out a worthy cause. |
