Judge Rejects Apple's Request for Permanent Ban of Samsung Smartphones | | Judge Lucy Koh has denied Apple's request for a permanent injunction against Samsung smartphones, Reuters reported. Apple had been awarded $1.05 billion in damages in an August verdict. The trial's jury found that Samsung willfully copied features of Apple's iPhone and iPad. The Cupertino, Calif. company also sought a permanent sales ban on the smartphones in question -- a formidable list of 26 devices.

Sony Xperia Jelly Bean Update Schedule Revealed | | Sony revealed the Android 4.1 update schedule for its 2012 Xperia smartphones on Monday. Sony Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V will be getting the Jelly Bean update "during February and March," while Xperia P, Xperia J and Xperia go will be upgraded "from the end of March," according to Sony Mobile's official blog.

| Research in Motion (RIM) on Monday sent out press invites for its BlackBerry 10 global launch event. RIM will officially unveil BlackBerry 10 to the public Jan. 30, 2013. Taking a page from Microsoft's playbook (no pun intended), RIM will be holding events in six different cities: New York Toronto London Paris Johannesburg Dubai Mashable will be on hand at the New York City event.

| Sen. Al Franken of Minnesota is championing the cause of data privacy -- specifically, he wants to keep the smartphone locations of women and children a secret from stalkers and third-party companies. Franken's new bill, the Location Protection Privacy Act of 2012, would outlaw so-called "stalking apps," software specifically designed to track a person's movements via their phone's GPS signal and which is marketed for nefarious purposes.

| Nokia has started rolling out its Windows Phone 7.8 software to some Nokia 800s, WP7.nl reports. Microsoft's not-quite-WP8 update for devices which launched with Windows Phone 7 will also be coming to Nokia Lumia 510 and 900, but Lumia 800 seems to be first to take the plunge. After the update, Lumia 800 owners can expect a number of upgrades, including resizable Live Tiles, more theme and accent colors, and a Bing-adorned lock screen.

| Facebook is preparing to release its own version of Snapchat, the photo and messaging app whose contents expire within 10 seconds, according to a report. The company plans to release the app "in the coming weeks," according to AllThingsD. Reps from Facebook could not be reached for comment. Snapchat has been one of the runaway success stories of 2012.
