| We're glad to see Google Maps back on iOS, and so is Sacha Greif, a Kyoto-based designer, coder and entrepreneur who points out the subtle excellence in the new app that rolled out for iOS Wednesday night. He likes its style: Google has carried over its now iconic and clean design from its other apps into this one, and he likes the white/light-gray look of it all.

| In addition to updating its Android app, Facebook pushed an update to Facebook for iOS on Thursday. Version 5.3 of the app includes a faster –- now native -- timeline, as well as a faster loading news feed. The most important feature in the update, however, has to do with photos rather than speed. Now when you upload photos to Facebook through your iOS device you can select an album for those photos to go into.

| Apple released its App Store Best of 2012 selections Thursday -- and there are a few surprises. Each year, Apple release a list of its best apps for iPhone and iPad in a variety of categories. Last year, Instagram received iPhone app of the year, while Snapseed got the best iPad app. A year later, Instagram is part of Facebook and Snapseed has been snapped up by Google.

One day you might be able to use your camera to see through walls. That capability could come from a new kind of computer chip that operates in the part of the radio spectrum, known as the terahertz range.

| Good news for Android users: you can now browse Facebook at twice the speed. The social network announced Version 2.0 of its Android app Thursday, which makes Facebook for Android completely native, and a great deal faster in the process. “Facebook for Android 2.0 is twice as fast when looking at photos and opening your Timeline and noticeably quicker to launch,” Facebook’s Philip Fund said in a blog post announcing the update.

The FTC says app developers are making little progress when it comes to protecting your kid's privacy. According to a new report, app developers aren't telling parents what kind of data is being collected and who has access to it.

| A U.S. court has ruled Apple's iPhone is in violation of three patents held by MobileMedia Ideas, a Maryland-based company. The U.S. District Court in Delaware handed down the ruling, first reported by Bloomberg via Twitter. MobileMedia, which is essentially a patent-holding company (its patents are prominently highlighted on its website), first sued Apple in March 2010, saying Apple was in violation of 20 of its patents.

| Amazon's Instant Video app, previously available only on the iPad, is now also available for the iPhone and iPod touch. The app lets Prime members freely access over 30,000 titles from Amazon's Prime Instant Video service. Titles include movies such as Hugo, Thor and Goodfellas, as well as TV shows such as American Horror Story, Downtown Abbey and Fringe.
