| Movie studio Paramount has teamed up with Qualcomm to create a new app for the upcoming film Star Trek Into Darkness. Announced at CES 2013, the app uses context-aware technologies to bring specific information to users at specific times. When the app launches at the end of January, fans will be able to get special Star Trek Into Darkness content, such as videos, photos and wallpaper delivered directly to the mobile device.

| Kickstarter had its first nine-figure pledge year in 2012. The crowdfunding platform received $320 million in pledges in 2012, more than triple the amount it received in 2011 and the first time it topped $100 million in a single year, according to year-end stats released by Kickstarter on Tuesday. Of those pledges, about $274 million was collected and went to 18,109 projects that were successfully funded last year.

| Following a test-piloting period over the holidays, Target has agreed to match prices with Amazon, Walmart.com, BestBuy.com, Toysrus.com and a handful of other online retailers year-round. In-store shoppers can secure price matches at the Guest Services department within seven days of purchase. Only one of each kind of product is eligible for price-matching.

| LAS VEGAS — At a keynote speech at CES 2013 on Tuesday, CEA president and CEO Gary Shapiro introduced UltraViolet, an effort by the major motion picture studios to cooperate with the consumer electronics industry to provide content to consumers. Consumer electronics companies announced for the partnership are LG, Vizio, Panasonic, Samsung, Toshiba, Philips and Sony.

| In 2012, tablets outsold notebook computers in the U.S. and China, but 2013 will be the year this trend goes global, according to NPD DisplaySearch. That's three years ahead of analysts' earlier estimates, and reflects a projected 64% growth in tablet purchases in 2013 versus 2012. This growth is driven primarily by a surge in purchases of smaller 7-inch and 8-inch tablets, which will represent 45% of the 240 million tablets sold in 2013.

| Amazon has launched its subscription program, Amazon Prime, in Canada. The service has previously been available in the U.S., Japan, the UK, Germany and France. For an annual fee of $79 (CDN), Canadians get free two-day shipping to "most cities" in Canada. In rural areas, specifically North or the Maritimes, users get unlimited shipping but without the two-day guarantee.

| AT&T sold 10 million smartphones in the fourth quarter, breaking the company's previous record of 9.4 million in 4Q 2011. The results, which include Android models and iPhones, break down to 110,000 smartphones a day, according to the company. AT&T didn't provide a breakdown of Android sales vs. iPhone sales. The latter likely enjoyed a boost thanks to the September introduction of the iPhone 5.
