| Cheap Smartphones Will be Widespread by 2017, Study Says | | Most smartphones are hefty investments, each leaving buyers a few hundred dollars in the hole. But a new study suggests that half of all smartphones will cost less than $150 in only a few years. Conducted by Informa Telecoms & Media, the study predicts that the smartphone market will be split into two extremes: low-end devices and high-end devices, retailing for less than $150 and more than $250, respectively.

| Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek announced its first quad-core SoC (System on chip) processor Tuesday, the first of its kind to hit the market. “Its not the first one announced, it’s the first one shipping, ” MediaTek spokesperson Finbarr Moynihan told Mashable during a demo of the new mobile processor earlier this week.

| The Samsung Galaxy Camera won't have to settle for the slow lane anymore. The Android-powered camera made its debut on AT&T's HSPA+ network, but it will soon be able to ride the much more speedy LTE airwaves on Verizon. Verizon announced on Tuesday it would begin selling the Galaxy Camera on Dec. 13 and that its version of the camera would be able to connect to the carrier's 4G LTE network.

| TIME magazine published its list of the top 10 gadgets of the year, and the iPhone 5 came out on top. The list also includes other goodies Apple users love, but there were some surprising omissions as well. The magazine praises the iPhone 5 as “melding hardware, software and services so tightly that the seams fade way.” In doing so, TIME says “Apple still has no peer,” in the smartphone market.
