China Now Has 300 Million 3G Subscribers | | All three of China's mobile telcos have just released their May figures, and the huge mobile market has hit another significant milestone: It has surpassed 300 million 3G users. China Mobile now has 129.40 million on its TD-SCDMA network despite it not supporting Apple's iPhone or iPad for full 3G functionality, China Unicom is now up to 95.9 million on its 3G data plans and China Telecom has convinced 88 million to sign up for 3G.

| The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is for anyone who wants better photos from their phone, but doesn't want to add too much bulk. Handling it at a product demo in New York City today, I was surprised about how small the device is, and it did a decent job of capturing images of distant objects with a minimum of blur due to camera shake.

| Video arrived on Instagram today. It's a move that will probably not surprise anyone, given the rise of Vine over the last several months and the competitive natures of Facebook and Twitter. However, it also represents a fairly big shift from the Instagram that we've come to know. During his talk at Facebook's press event today, co-founder Kevin Systrom made sure to explain that video was always part of Instagram's plans.

| If you thought the Samsung Galaxy Camera, the company's Android-powered connected camera, was a one-off, think again. Samsung just unveiled the Galaxy NX, a mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera that also runs Android. And it has LTE. Like other Samsung mirrorless cameras, the Galaxy NX has a 20.3-megapixel APS-C sensor with hybrid autofocus. The rear LCD is a large 4.8-inch touchscreen, and there's an electronic viewfinder as well.

On June 14, President Obama detailed plans for governmentwide spectrum sharing with commercial carriers, an effort he views as an economic imperative.

| The New York Times is poking a few holes through its metered paywall: On Thursday, the paper announced that non-subscribers can read up to three articles per day on its mobile apps, beginning June 27. That's more generous than the Times' desktop paywall, which limits non-subscribers to 10 free articles per month. It may not be more generous than its previous offering to mobile readers, however.
