MyLED Brings Notification Lights to iPads and iPhones | Tuesday, December 04, 2012 4:12 PM | Anita Li |
| Some Apple users lament the lack of a notification light on their favorite iProducts. It's a feature that most other smart-devices boast, leaving some fans of the Cupertino, Calif., company in the dark. A new tool called myLED aims to get Apple fans caught up. The external notification light for iPhones and iPads flashes to alert users of missed calls, emails and social-network updates so they can keep posted on activity without having to switch on their phone or tablet's screen. "There is no convenient way to get alerts ... on iOS -- if you've used a BlackBerry or Android and have seen them flash to alert you, you'll understand the difference," according to myLED's Kickstarter page. "Phone notifications are a small detail, however, it can cause much aggravation to check the phone for new activity every few minutes."

Facebook Introduces Messenger For Non-Users | Tuesday, December 04, 2012 11:29 AM | Todd Wasserman |
| Facebook on Tuesday introduced a feature for its Messenger Android app that lets users log on with a name and phone number, rather than having to enter their account info. In practice, that means that you don’t have to have a Facebook account to use Messenger. The feature, which will soon come to iOS as well, is rolling out to Android users in India, Indonesia, Australia, Venezuela and South Africa on Tuesday and will hit other markets “shortly after,” according to the company. The move represents an attempt by Facebook to lure holdouts or customers who deleted their accounts. The app is also an alternative to other SMS apps like GoogleVoice, Kik and WhatsApp, among others. For Facebook, which has been under pressure to deliver a coherent mobile strategy, a more open Messenger will also help secure some smartphone real estate otherwise controlled by Apple and Google.

You can always try to awkwardly hold your phone with your free hand while you pedal, but really, that's just asking for an accident -- or a dropped phone. GoRide is a bike mount specifically designed for the iPhone. The small, two-ounce case clips directly to the handlebars of your bike. It can be mounted either vertically or horizontally, giving you front row access to your phone while you ride.

| When the power goes out unexpectedly, like it did for so many in the northeastern United States during Hurricane Sandy, alternative sources of energy gain attention. There are the big questions: Should we free ourselves from foreign oil like Barack Obama proposed in his victory speech? And there are the smaller issues: How can I charge my phone in a more efficient way? Across the country and around the world there are alternative energy stories. In addition to helping re-elect Barack Obama on Election Day, California residents passed Proposition 39, which allocates $2.5 billion in clean energy and energy efficiency projects. In Africa, a team of researchers from Stanford University is using the sun to power the cameras and audio equipment they use to monitor wild elephants

| Rupert Murdoch and Apple’s big bet on an iPad-only subscription-based old-school newspaper, The Daily, turned out to be a losing one. I’m not surprised. For as slick-looking as the iPad publication was, it never had the scent of success. It’s true, The Daily was ever-so briefly near the top of paid iPad app heap. On its first birthday, The Daily reported 100,000 paid subscribers and was the third-top-grossing iPad app in the iTunes store. That birthday party, however, was short-lived. Last summer, News Corp slashed The Daily staff, laying off 50. Now The New York Post will absorb some of the remaining staff and digital publication.
