Microsoft Opens the Beta Version of Socl to Everyone
4:50:15 AMStan Schroeder

After a long period of closed beta testing, Microsoft made the beta version of its social network, Socl, available to everyone on Tuesday

Socl initially launched this May. It's a search-meets-social networking website that looks more like Pinterest than Facebook, and has until now been open only to invited Microsoft employees and college students

Now, everyone with a Microsoft or Facebook account can access it. The sign-up process is effortless -- users simply connect their account with Socl. They can then start sharing content (e.g. photos, videos, links), and comment on other members' posts

Facebook Now Lets Users Create Repeat Events From the Past
2:52:56 AMAnita Li

Facebook built a new feature that lets users create a repeat event, company engineer Bob Baldwin announced Monday.

Members of the social network can now go to any past event that they hosted or attended, and replicate a new, similar event.

"It'll copy the details into a new event (which you can preview and edit before posting) and invite your friends from the past event," Baldwin wrote on his Facebook Timeline.

Rather than going back to square one, the feature will make it easier for users to fill in an event's recurrent details -- useful for monthly trivia nights or weekly study groups, for example.

Facebook Introduces Messenger For Non-Users
Tuesday, December 04, 2012 11:29 AMTodd Wasserman

Facebook on Tuesday introduced a feature for its Messenger Android app that lets users log on with a name and phone number, rather than having to enter their account info.

In practice, that means that you don’t have to have a Facebook account to use Messenger. The feature, which will soon come to iOS as well, is rolling out to Android users in India, Indonesia, Australia, Venezuela and South Africa on Tuesday and will hit other markets “shortly after,” according to the company.

The move represents an attempt by Facebook to lure holdouts or customers who deleted their accounts. The app is also an alternative to other SMS apps like GoogleVoice, Kik and WhatsApp, among others. For Facebook, which has been under pressure to deliver a coherent mobile strategy, a more open Messenger will also help secure some smartphone real estate otherwise controlled by Apple and Google.

Monday, December 03, 2012 8:44 PMZoe Fox

The Nielsen company's latest report shows that social networking has become ubiquitous while watching TV and while using the bathroom

The report says that one-third of Twitter users in June tweeted about TV shows -- a 27% increase from five months earlier.

"Twitter has become the second screen experience for television," Deirdre Bannon, vice president of social media at Nielsen, said.

The U.S. lags behind other parts of the world for social media use while watching TV. In the Middle East and Africa, 63% of people user social media during TV time, and 52% in Latin America.

How to Email Tweets Directly From Twitter's Website
Monday, December 03, 2012 8:30 PMEmily Price

Twitter has started rolling out the ability to email tweets from its website.

Announced mid-November, the feature allows you to send a tweet directly to someone else, complete with your own personal comments, regardless of whether or not that person is a Twitter user.

Available in Twitter’s mobile app for some time now, on the web it exists as part of a “More” button beside the Reply, Retweet, and Favorite buttons.

When clicked, the “Email Tweet” option appears below the More menu in a drop-down style that suggests Twitter may add additional options to the menu in the future.

Writer Sued for his Twitter Followers Settles Case
Monday, December 03, 2012 6:17 PMChris Taylor

Remember the curious case of Noah Kravitz, the tech blogger who was sued by his former employer for his Twitter followers -- in a lawsuit that set the worth of a Twitter follower at $2.50 each?

If so, you can stop being outraged about it. Kravitz and the former employer, tech site PhoneDog, have settled the case after a year and a half of tough mediation. And although no one is offering details about the settlement, it sounds like no money is changing hands for Twitter followers

PhoneDog, a mobile reviews site, currently has 27,000 followers on Twitter. When Kravitz left the site in October 2010, he took his @phonedog_noah account and turned it into @noahkravitz, which now has 23,000 followers. He claims to have done so with the site's blessing (and court documents showed evidence of an agreement where Kravitz was asked to send occasional PhoneDog tweets from the account)

Social Media Use Leads to Real-World Actions
Monday, December 03, 2012 4:10 PMBusinessNewsDaily

The thought is father to the deed, at least when it comes to the relationship between online social interactions and offline activities. A new survey shows that more than half of users on four of the top five social platforms have taken offline action directly as a result of an online interaction. The findings suggest that businesses and organizations can grow their customer base, increase revenue and drive greater participation by linking online behaviors to offline activity.

The three most popular offline actions taken as a result of online engagement are to contact a person directly, attend an event and participate in an activity such as a sport or a class, according to a survey of 500 consumers commissioned by ACTIVE Network, which develops cloud-based activity and participant management technologies.

How Social Networks Are Redefining Journalism
Monday, December 03, 2012 12:26 PMChristine Erickson

While the social media industry skyrockets, many traditional media companies continue to struggle. With millions of users updating statuses, posting photos and sharing articles, these networks have become massive content hubs.

But as millions of people create content each day, how does one find the best and use it to engage a larger user base? Social networks are now hiring editorial teams and becoming publishers of the future by creating -- and curating -- useful news and information

At the 2012 Mashable Media Summit Friday, community manager Meghan Peters discussed how social networks are evolving their content strategies, with Jessica Bennett, editorial director at Tumblr, and Daniel Roth, executive editor at LinkedIn
