Google launched a new program called the Global Impact Awards, in which it will give out $23 million in grants to seven non-profit organizations on Tuesday.
The program supports groups that use technology to solve "the world’s toughest human challenges," according to an Official Google Blog post. Google explained that tech innovators are typically underfunded in the non-profit sector, so grants were awarded for non-profits' initiatives to change the status quo
Google awarded Global Impact Awards to the following projects:
Mayor Cory Booker from Newark, N.J. will just spend $29.78 on food this week, in a solidarity campaign with people living on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly and more popularly referred to as food stamps.
The social media savvy mayor is tweeting the experience with the hashtag #SNAPChallenge. Booker first tweeted that he'd be participating in the challenge on Nov. 21, when he invited his followers to join him in the initiative to raise awareness for food justice. The N.J. Mayor also announced he will be documenting his experience on Twitter>, Facebook, LinkedIn and the video sharing platform he co-founded Waywire.
The Tube-a-Tweet-a-Thon Holiday Spectacular, a new variety show that will be livestreamed Dec. 13 and benefit homeless youth, has roped in rapper Snoop Lion, celebrities and YouTube stars to fill the benefit with musical and comedic entertainment.
The event, from YouTube talk show What's Trending, will leverage Twitter to accumulate donations. Each tweet viewers send (up to 50,000) with the hashtag #Tubeathon will automatically donate $1 to the Covenant House, courtesy of Virgin Mobile. People can also donate via Text2Donate or at VirginMobileLive.com on the day of show, which starts at 9 p.m. EST on What's Trending's YouTube channel.
SodaStream, an Isreali company that lets consumers make their own carbonated sodas at home, will run an ad during next year's Super Bowl.
The company is working on an ad with Common, an agency headed by Alex Bogusky. Bogusky famously left traditional advertising in 2010 to find a "more genuine version" of himself. That mission has led him to come up against former clients, including Coca-Cola, which dismissed a recent Bogusky-produced anti-sugar video as "grandstanding."
Backing SodaStream may appear like another challenge to Coke, which is also advertising during the game (Pepsi is also sponsoring the halftime show.) However, the move is ostensibly more about saving the environment. The company claims the average consumer can save 2,000 bottles and cans a year
The thought is father to the deed, at least when it comes to the relationship between online social interactions and offline activities. A new survey shows that more than half of users on four of the top five social platforms have taken offline action directly as a result of an online interaction. The findings suggest that businesses and organizations can grow their customer base, increase revenue and drive greater participation by linking online behaviors to offline activity.
The three most popular offline actions taken as a result of online engagement are to contact a person directly, attend an event and participate in an activity such as a sport or a class, according to a survey of 500 consumers commissioned by ACTIVE Network, which develops cloud-based activity and participant management technologies.
