Twitter Boosts College Grades and Class Engagement [STUDY]
Saturday, October 20, 2012 7:29 PMLorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai

Twitter has been credited with -- and blamed for -- a lot of things. Supporters claim it fueled the Green Revolution in Iran and helped the Arab Spring, critics argue it's hurting our ability to write and think. There's no consensus on the former, but a new study now argues that the second claim is wrong. Twitter may actually give students an educational boost.

Christina Greenhow, an assistant professor of education at Michigan State University, discovered that students using the microblogging service as part of their education are more engaged and have higher grades. In fact, she considers it "a new literary practice," as she explains in her study "Twitteracy: Tweeting as a New form of Literary Practice."

Greenhow taught a class that required each student to have a Twitter account that was used in different ways throughout the semester. She noticed students were more engaged than in the twitter-less past.

Check out the details of this new study in the video above.

Do you think Twitter is a good thing for young students? Or does it actually hurt their grammar and literary skills?

What Are the Hottest Soft Drink Brands in Social Media? [CHART]
Saturday, October 20, 2012 5:30 PMLorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai

Red Bull dominated this week's chart of soft drink brands with the highest social media engagement. You can probably guess why.

According to Starcount, the data aggregator which tracks metrics from 11 networks to measure social popularity, Red Bull topped the list ahead of arch-rivals Coca-Cola and Pepsi.

The Austrian energy drink company has to thank Felix Baumgartner for its success this week. Fearless Felix's jump from the edge of space was the talk of the week, and other than real life records, it also broke some social media records. In fact, it was the most-watched live video in YouTube's history.

In other findings, Coca-Cola achieved the highest engagement, continuing to pile up Facebook fans -- it even doubled first-place Red Bull. The rankings didn't change since last time apart from Red Bull taking the top spot and Monster overtaking Dr Pepper for the fourth place. The energy drink had a strong week as far as YouTube video views, with more than 300,000, although a far cry from the two soda giants, which both recorded more than one million views.

Pinterest Tops Facebook in Driving Ecommerce [VIDEO]
Saturday, October 20, 2012 4:31 PMJoann Pan

If you can't stop yourself from buying accessories, clothes, handbags, apartment decor and recipe ingredients after seeing them all in pins, you're not alone.

A recent survey of 7,431 online shoppers, conducted by BizRate Insights, reveals Pinterest motivates more online purchases than Facebook.

More than 70% of Pinterest's 10 million users told BizRate that they turn to the social pinboard for shopping inspiration and to keep up with trends. There's also better user engagement with brands on the photo-sharing website: 66% of users regularly follow and repin retailers. Only 17% of Facebook users said they rely on the social network for purchasing inspiration. But while Pinterest's 10 million users drive more purchases to retail websites, Facebook still dominates in reach and sending traffic to third-party websites.

Are you surprised by these numbers? Where do you turn for shopping ideas: Facebook, Pinterest or another site? Tell us in the comments below.

Why Facebook Job Apps Will Ultimately Fail
Saturday, October 20, 2012 3:59 PMAmit De

Amit De is the CEO and co-founder of Careerleaf, a platform that helps job seekers showcase their skills and talents, search for jobs, and track and organize communications all from one place. Connect with Amit and CareerLeaf on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

While many Facebook job apps are trying to give LinkedIn a run for its money, none of the job search and recruitment apps available today are true competition for everyone's main professional network, LinkedIn. Apps like Glassdoor, BranchOut, and BeKnown attempt to leverage the social platform as a way to make professional connections -- but since Facebook's social platform was built for personal interactions, most job seekers don't want to leverage it as part of their job hunt.

Although a recent job seeker survey shows that Facebook is the favored platform for job hunting, the apps just aren't up to par with competing websites. The following is why these types of Facebook apps will not succeed as a main tool for professional networking, recruitment, and job searching.

SEE ALSO: Why You Should Keep Facebook and Your Job Search Separate

First, Facebook apps offer less privacy. Glassdoor users historically enjoyed anonymity in posting their salaries and experiences with companies. The Glassdoor Facebook app, which is populated by 4.2 million monthly active users (and only about 150,000 using the app daily), takes this anonymity away by showing you which friends are on Glassdoor. Forbes writer Kashmir Hill provides an example of why this is a problem:

"A colleague of mine was recently doing a little salary sleuthing on the site and noted that in the 'anonymous salary information' on Glassdoor, one VP had volunteered that he or she made $167K. 'I'm Facebook friends with exactly one vice president, my colleague writes. 'Does he make $167,000? It seems that with a little sleuthing you could find out exactly what your coworkers -- at least the ones you're Facebook friends with -- make.'"

Privacy vs. Sharing

Next, on Facebook there's inability to separate personal and professional contacts. With BranchOut, many users feel it is simply not professional enough for their job search -- often citing vague permissions screens and the high possibility of spamming their friends as reason enough not to use the app. In fact, in a review of the application, Laurence Hebberd of Link Human writes that users are only given the option to "add a group of friends from a particular school, university or workplace. You cannot choose particular friends to invite, or remove them from the app invitation."

Many Facebook users want to be careful about who they include in their professional network -- and the "option for apps such as this really needs to be selective down to each Facebook friend, not a whole group invite," Hebberd writes. However, BeKnown's upside -- the ability for users to list specific friends, only if they agree to be included -- is a step in the right direction, despite only reaching about 250,000 users each month.

Additionally, most Facebook users still don't desire to merge their personal and professional lives, as evident by the "relatively minuscule use of the Facebook apps that venture into professional profiles or networking," writes Randall Stross in The New York Times. BranchOut currently has 4.2 million monthly active users, while its daily user count has been on a steady decline -- compared to LinkedIn's 150 million registered users.

Ultimately, job seekers, while they may check out Facebook job apps, will return to tried-and-true sites like LinkedIn for their job search.

Alternatives to Facebook Job Apps

Users who like the more intimate feel of Facebook apps but dislike the platform should look for niche sites, designed for a more focused job search and networking experience. Niche communities and job boards -- such as Dribbble, deviantART, Github and StackOverflow -- still allow candidates to connect and network, but also offer a professional platform by which to apply for jobs.

While these types of sites don't have as nearly as many users or the amount of traffic that Facebook boasts (Dribbble reportedly has upwards of 94,000 daily views), users have a higher success rate of being found and hired via niche networks than on Facebook (only one to three percent of hires from major recruiters are attributed to Facebook).

Do you use Facebook job apps? What has been your experience with them?

Blogger Hires Woman to Slap Him Every Time He's On Facebook [VIDEO]
Saturday, October 20, 2012 1:05 PMJoann Pan

When San Francisco-based blogger Maneesh Sethi realized he was wasting too much time on Facebook, YouTube and Reddit, he resolved to change his work habits.

His solution: Pay someone $8 an hour to slap him when it appears he's wasting time on a social network.

The full Craigslist ad reads:

Hey!

I'm looking for someone who can work next to me at a defined location (my house or a mission cafe) and will make sure to watch what is happening on my screen. When I am wasting time, you'll have to yell at me or if need be, slap me.

You can do your own work at the same time. Looking for help asap, in mission, near 16th mission BART.

Compensation: $8 / hour, and you can do your own work from your computer at the same time.

The ad, unsurprisingly, received about 20 responses within the first 60 minutes. The writer chose a woman named Kara, who can be seen in the video above dedicating herself to keep Sethi productive during her three-hour shift.

The self-help blogger wrote about his experience on Hack the System. Using an app called RescueTime, he calculated his productivity levels. During the experiment, his average productivity level shot through the roof from 38%, on average, to 98%.

He takes away one lesson from his experience. He wrote: "If you add a social element to the work that you do, you will become more productive. Honestly, the fear of the slap wasn't the productivity driver. That just made it fun. The real reason why Kara made me more productive is because she added a social element to writing. When I was drafting the outline, I asked for her feedback. When I couldn't think of the right way to phrase a sentence, she was there to help."
