How Internet Sleuths Unraveled a Family's 20-Year-Old Mystery The Internet loves a challenge. Case in point: When a woman asked an online forum for help decoding her dying grandmother's "cancer-addled ramblings," users began to unravel the decades-old mystery in a matter of minutes. Janna Holm posted two images -- the front and back of an index card, each side covered in long strings of letters -- to the site Ask MetaFilter on Monday. How does Mashable know what's going viral? Mashable built a system called Velocity, which scours the social web, collecting lots and lots of data around how people are engaging with published articles. It then pulls all of that data back to Mashable, dumps it into our own predictive engine, and predicts which articles are about to go viral.
