English driver Dan Wheldon dies in massive IndyCar crash

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 07:23 PM PDT

LAS VEGAS (BNO NEWS) -- English race car driver Dan Wheldon died on Sunday afternoon after a massive 15-car wreck at the 2011 IZOD IndyCar World Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada.

During lap 11 of the world championship, Wheldon was involved in a serious 15-car accident which also injured three others. Emergency teams had to pull Wheldon out of the race car and airlift him to University Medical Center where he later died at the age of 33.

The accident happened when two cars touched tires as vehicles ran inches apart on the high-banked 1.5-mile (2.4 km) oval. Wheldon's car, ensnared in the jumble in the middle of the racetrack, flew over another and caught part of the catch fence just past the apex of Turn 2. The incident left cars smoldering and car parts strewn along the backstretch.

IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard announced Wheldon's death, and a five-lap tribute was carried out as 19 drivers drove around the Las Vegas Motor Speedway while bagpipes played "Amazing Grace." IndyCar officials later ruled the 200-lap race as incomplete, and Monday's IndyCar Championship Celebration at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino was canceled.

The three injured racers were J.R. Hildebrand, Pippa Mann, and Will Power, who were also taken to the University Medical Center. Hildebrand stayed overnight for observation but was reported awake and alert. Mann, meanwhile had her pinkie finger operated after suffering from burns, but she will soon be released. Power was released that same afternoon after medical examinations.

Wheldon, of Emberton, England, had won this year's Indianapolis 500, as well as in 2005, when he became the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series champ. He is survived by his wife, Susie, two young sons, his parents, Clive and Susie, and three siblings.

The IZOD IndyCar had not seen a fatality since Paul Dana died of injuries suffered in a crash in the race morning warmup at Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2006. Wheldon won the race later that day.

At least 8 dead in southwestern China mine accident

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 07:14 PM PDT

CHONGQING, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- At least eight people have been killed and several others remain missing after an explosion ripped through a coal mine in southwestern China, state-run media reported on Monday.

The explosion happened at around 1:20 p.m. local time in the Dashu Township of Fengjie County, located in China's Chongqing Municipality, government officials told the state-run Xinhua news agency.

According to officials, 16 miners were working in the mine at the time of the gas explosion. Eight of them have been confirmed dead while five others remain unaccounted for. Three workers were successfully rescued, two of them who had injuries.

Rescue teams continued to work at the site throughout the day as local authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.

Safety conditions at mines in China have significantly improved in recent years but they remain among the world's most dangerous with 1,083 fatalities in the first seven months of 2011 alone. There were 2,433 fatalities in 2010 and 2,631 in 2009.

China in recent years shut down scores of small mines to improve safety and efficiency in the mining industry. The country has also ordered all mines to build emergency shelter systems by June 2013 which are to be equipped with machines to produce oxygen and air conditioning, protective walls and airtight doors to protect workers against toxic gases and other hazardous factors.

The first manned test of such a permanent underground chamber was carried out in August when around 100 people - including managers, engineers, miners, medical staff, and the chamber's developers - took part in a 48-hour test at a mine owned by the China National Coal Group in the city of Shuozhou in northern China's Shanxi Province.

One of the worst mining accidents in China in recent years happened in November 2009 when 104 workers were killed after several explosions at a coal mine in Heilongjiang province.

Heavy rainfall leaves more than 70 dead in Central America

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 07:07 PM PDT

GUATEMALA CITY (BNO NEWS) -- At least 74 people have been killed and tens of thousands more have been affected by heavy rainfall which continues across Central America, officials said on Monday. The death toll is expected to rise.

During the last week, torrential rains have caused landslides, flooding and collapsing structures in different regions of Central America. A total of 74 people have been confirmed killed in El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Guatemala.

Salvadorian Civil Protection chief Jorge Melendez said at least 27 people had been killed in El Salvador alone, including nine people who died in Arce City as a result of a landslide which buried them.

After one week of torrential rains, over 13,500 people have been evacuated from their homes, of which 209 are currently housed in temporary camps. However, Melendez said the number of victims is likely to continue to increase as the harsh weather persists.

Meanwhile, Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom has declared a State of Calamity, confirming that 28 people have died in the country after five consecutive days of heavy rainfall. In addition, almost 110,000 people have been affected including some 13,000 people who are staying at temporary camps.

In Honduras, President Porfirio Lobo was unable to return to the country after a visit to the Vatican. Officials said his aircraft was unable to land in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, forcing a landing in El Salvador.

Meanwhile, Honduran government official Lisandro Rosales said the number of deaths in the country has reached 12 as a result of the rainfall while more than 30,000 people have lost their homes.

In addition, at least seven people have died in Nicaragua where around 5,500 people have been affected, including some 1,200 people who have been evacuated. They are expected to remain in the 25 temporary camps which have been set up by officials until the weather improves.

Weather forecasts show that heavy rainfall is expected in the region until at least Tuesday.

Bomb blasts rock Nigerian police barracks, killing 3

Posted: 17 Oct 2011 06:20 PM PDT

GOMBE, NIGERIA (BNO NEWS) -- At least three people were killed on early Sunday morning when a group of assailants bombed a mobile police barracks in eastern Nigeria, official said on Monday.

The attack happened at a mobile police base in Kwame, located in the Kwame Local Government Area about five kilometers (3.1 miles) from Gombe, when a series of three bombs exploded in the area, Gombe State Police Commissioner Orubebe Ebikeme told the Nigerian Tribune.

According to reports, at around 2:20 a.m. local time on Sunday, the attackers entered the base and detonated a series of explosives before fleeing with a number of firearms and ammunition, which they stole from the base.

Authorities immediately cordoned off the area, saying that there were still some explosives in the area which had not yet detonated. At least three people were confirmed dead, although some reports indicated that four people had died, including one police officer and three civilians.

The attack comes just a few days after the U.S. government released an update on its travel warning for Nigeria, which was followed by Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

On Thursday, the U.S. said "violent crime committed by individuals and gangs, as well as by persons wearing police and military uniforms, remains a problem throughout the country."
