How to Remove Ads (aka Special Offers) from a Kindle

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 08:40 AM PST

Amazon now sells most Kindle devices with “Special Offers” which means advertising is displayed when the device isn’t being used for reading. In exchange for displaying the ads, the Kindle is sold at a lower price point. Therefore, it makes sense to buy a Kindle with the ads.

If you get tired of seeing the ads, thankfully it’s easy to make them go away:

  1. Go to Amazon.com
  2. Click on “Your Account” in the upper right
  3. Go down to the Digital Content section and choose “Manage Your Kindle”
  4. In the list of devices, find your Kindle and change the “Special Offers” column. You’ll be prompted to remove the special offers, which results in a one-time charge that equals the discount you paid when you originally purchased the device.

Bam. An ad-free Kindle.

In a product that’s definitely inspired by Flipboard, Google Currents allows a publisher to easily provide their work in a mobile-friendly view for Android, the iPhone, and iPad. Watch this video (less than two minutes) to learn more:

I’ve published this blog along with my latest photo gallery photos into an edition called Current Hockley. Curious to see how it looks? Grab Google Currents from either the Apple or Android app stores and search for Hockley.
