Rwandan rebels kill dozens of civilians in DR Congo

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 03:15 PM PST

KINSHASA (BNO NEWS) -- Attacks by a Rwandan rebel group in the eastern Democratic Republic (DR) of Congo this week have left dozens of people killed, human rights groups told the UN-backed Radio Okapi on Thursday.

On Monday and Tuesday, the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) reportedly killed at least 39 people in the Shabunda region of South Kivu. The rebels attacked several villages in Bamuguba South, including Luyuyu, Ngolombe and Kishenya.

The human rights groups reported that 30 people were killed in Luyuyu alone, among them a pregnant woman whose stomach was hacked open and her baby removed. Eight were killed in Ngolombe while the village head of Kishenya was decapitated.

According to several sources quoted by the radio station, the FDLR has promised to "shoot at everything that moves". The attacks are reportedly reprisals against people for supporting youths who have organized themselves into vigilante groups to fight the rebels.

The FDLR is composed almost entirely of ethnic Hutus who fled from neighboring Rwanda after the genocide of 1994, where an estimated 800,000 people were killed. The rebels have been accused of committing dozens of terrorist attacks and atrocities, including rapes and killings.

In December, former commander of the FDLR and United Nations (UN) employee Callixte Mbarushimana was released by the International Criminal Court after judges ruled that there was not sufficient evidence to prosecute him. It was alleged that he directed and participated in the murder of 32 people in 1994, including UN employees he was hired to protect.

Hundreds evacuate as activity rises at Indonesia’s Mount Lewotolok

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 03:06 PM PST

KUPANG, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- Hundreds of people living near a volcano in the Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara were evacuated on Thursday because of increased volcanic activity, the Antara news agency reported.

About 500 people residing near Mount Lewotolok in Lembata district abandoned their homes amid the volcano's mounting activity. "Most of them left for the nearest city, Lewoleba," said Lembata Deputy District Chief Viktor Mado Watun, as quoted by Antara. "All related government officials will soon hold a coordination meeting to deal with the latest situation."

"Black smoke columns are coming out of the mountain's crater, the air is filled with the smell of sulfur while rumbling sounds are heard around the mountain," he added.

Residents decided to leave due to the increasing activity of Mount Lewotolok over the past few days, even though the government has not yet announced an evacuation plan. Viktor said ten villages are likely to be affected and suffer material losses if the volcano erupts.

On January 2, the country's Volcanology and Geology Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) raised the alert level at the volcano to level 3. The center uses a warning system with four levels of alerts, with level 1 being the lowest and level 4 being the highest.

Dozens of active volcanoes in Indonesia are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

One of Indonesia's most active volcanoes is Mount Merapi, which is located on the island of Java near Jogjakarta, the country's second-most visited area after Bali. In 2010, more than 300 people were killed in a series of eruptions between October and November which also displaced over 300,000 people.

Mass prison fight in northeastern Mexico leaves 31 killed

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 02:42 PM PST

ALTAMIRA, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- Thirty-one inmates were killed on late Wednesday afternoon when a large fight broke out at a prison in the northeastern region of Mexico, state officials confirmed on Thursday.

The prison fight between two groups of inmates broke out at around 5 p.m. local time at a penitentiary in the municipality of Altamira, which is located at the southern tip of the state of Tamaulipas and on the Gulf of Mexico.

The local Public Security Department and the state's Attorney General's office said 31 people were killed after inmates from module 11 and module 12 of Altamira's Sanctions Center clashed violently. Local authorities said the inmates used self-made weapons during the fight.

Personnel from the Public Security Department's Special Forces, the Mexican Army, as well as state and federal security forces were deployed to restore order. After bringing the facility under control, 13 inmates were identified as being responsible for starting the mass prison fight.

Other details were not immediately released.

Prison outbreaks and prison riots occur frequently in Mexico. In mid-October, a total of 20 inmates were killed when two inmates began fighting at a prison in the city of Matamoros, located in the state of Tamaulipas near the U.S. border. Other inmates joined the fight.

Mexico has been struggling to cope with an influx of criminals as President Felipe Calderón continues with his campaign against organized crime and drug cartels. According to estimates, at least 12,359 people died as a result of drug-related violence in 2011 alone.

Tour bus falls off bridge in southwestern China, killing 18

Posted: 05 Jan 2012 02:20 PM PST

GUIYANG, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- At least eighteen people were killed on early Wednesday evening when a tour bus fell off a bridge in southwestern China, the government said on Thursday. Dozens more were injured.

The accident happened at around 6.35 p.m. local time on Wednesday when a passenger bus ran off a bridge in Guilding county of Guizhou province, causing it to fall about 9 meters (29.5 feet). It took place on the Lanzhou-Kaikou expressway.

A spokesperson for the State Administration of Work Safety said the death toll stood at 18 as of Thursday, while 38 others were reported to have been injured. The 53-seat bus was carrying a total of 57 people, including four infants, at the time of the accident.

The tour bus, which was registered to the Kaihong Passenger Travel Company in Anhui province, had earlier left the city of Yiwu in Zhejiang Province and was heading toward Xuyong county in Sichuan province.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known, but police said the driver of the bus was fatigued and was speeding on the icy section of the expressway.

Wednesday's accident marks the week's second deadly accident involving a passenger bus in China. On Tuesday, at least 13 people were killed and 41 others were injured when a coach collided with a heavy-duty truck on the mid-section of Shanghai-Kunming expressway in central Hunan Province.

Roads in China are known to be among the most dangerous in the world with more than 70,000 fatalities in 2009 alone. Many accidents are the result of drivers violating traffic laws, bad road conditions and overloaded vehicles.

With the upcoming Chinese New Year and the country's vacation and travel high season, some 2.85 billion people are expected to hit the road across the country. The travel peak is expected to begin on January 8 and last until February 16.
