Clean Up Your Computer

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 04:09 AM PST

Profile AmericaProfile America — Monday, January 9th. The beginning of a new year is traditionally the time for a fresh start — getting things organized both at home and at work. That’s why this is National Clean-Off-Your-Desk Day. Experts say that the average person uses just 20 percent of the stuff on their desk to accomplish 80 percent of their work. Noting that a messy computer is less obvious than a messy desk and how important computers are in the modern home and workplace, it’s also National Clean Up Your Computer Month. More than three-quarters of U.S. adults use a computer either at home or on the job, and the same proportion use the Internet. Sending e-mails, getting maps or driving instructions, watching videos, and buying a product online are the most common computer uses. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at <www.census.gov>.

Body at Queen’s estate identified as missing teenager

Posted: 09 Jan 2012 02:04 AM PST

NORFOLK, ENGLAND (BNO NEWS) -- Human remains which were found on the Queen's Sandringham estate in eastern England on New Year's Day have been identified as a missing 17-year-old girl, police said on Sunday.

The remains were found by a member of the public at around 4 p.m. local time on New Year's Day in an area of woodland at Anmer, a tiny village which is part of Sandringham estate in Norfolk county. The investigation later turned into a murder investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Jes Fry, of the Joint Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team and who is leading the investigation, said Sunday that the remains have been identified as 17-year-old Alisa Dmitrijeva. She had been missing from Wisbech in Cambridgeshire since August 31, although she was not reported missing until September 6.

It took police nearly a week to confirm the girl's identity as earlier tests to establish a DNA profile proved inconclusive. "Following initial tests to obtain a full DNA profile, identification of the victim has been made by comparing detail from her palm with records held which have been further verified by DNA from her femur," police said.

Fry said his department would start working with officers in Cambridgeshire who have been trying to locate Dmitrijeva in recent months. "The information they provide will give me and the team an extra focus to the inquiry," he said. "I should also add we are still trying to establish any activity which took place on or around the site during the time frame of the end of August to the end of September 2011."

Dmitrijeva's family was informed of the news on Sunday morning and said they were devastated. "We are devastated by the news of Alisa's death. We wish to grieve in private," the family said in a brief statement.

The case has attracted worldwide attention as Dmitrijeva was found in an area which is part of Sandringham estate. The estate of Queen Elizabeth II is used by the royal family to spend some of its holidays, including the recent Christmas and New Year's holidays.

Plant Sale Returns

NC Cooperative Extension Service

LINCOLNTON – Lincoln County Cooperative Extension is beginning its annual plant sale. We've had a lot of requests for muscadine vines and this year we're pleased to offer three varieties:

'Ison'© — Black Self-fertile. 19% sugar, very productive, ripens uniformly, large clusters, dry scar, early to mid season. Best black pollinator. Patent #5822

'Late Fry' © — Bronze Self-fertile. 20% sugar. Very large clusters, good quality, ripens late. Very vigorous and very high yields. Patent # 9224

'Nesbit' – Black Self-Fertile. 18% sugar, large clusters, very productive, disease resistant, dry scar, ripens over long period. Mid-late season.

Muscadines are the best type of grape for our area. The vines will be two years old in one-gallon containers and will be several feet tall. All three are self-fertile varieties and will produce fruit without another pollinator. Muscadines should be planted in a good garden soil located in full sun. While their pests are minimal, they do require pruning and trellising.

Following are the blueberry varieties being offered. They are among the very best for our area.

'Climax'–Early ripening. Medium size berries. Sweet flavor. Upright growth with intense green foliage. One of the very best for harvesting.

'Powderblue'—Late season ripening. Medium to large size fruit, darker blue in color, sweet taste. Upright, highly productive plant. Good foliage.

'Premier'—Early to mid-season ripening. Large, light blue, good quality fruit; excellent flavor. Highly productive, upright growth, good foliage.

'Tifblue'—Mid-season ripening. Medium to large light blue, good quality berries. Vigorous upright plants hold up well until last berries are harvested. Tifblue rates as the best ornamental for fall leaf color.

The blueberry plants should average about 16" tall and will be in one gallon containers. Although some varieties are self-fertile, we still recommend buying more than one variety to insure pollination and supply some diversity. Approximate fruit bearing age is three years. Usually, the plants will come with flower buds on them. While it's hard to do, it's best to remove these bloom buds the first season to encourage the plant to put its energy into growth.

Basically, growing blueberries is like growing azaleas, another member of the Heath family, except blueberries need full sun. They need a well-drained, acidic soil high in organic matter. They also benefit from an organic mulch such as pine bark. While they don't like wet soil, they will suffer if the soil dries out.
Even if you don't buy your plants from us, we encourage you to add some blueberries to your garden or landscape. They are a highly nutritious fruit and have very few pest problems. Some varieties like 'Tiflbue' make good ornamentals and fit very nicely into the "edible landscape" concept.

All the plants are $7 each. The deadline for ordering from us is February 29. Plants will be available sometime in March at the James W. Warren Citizens Center in Lincolnton. Purchasers will be notified in advance of the precise date and time of pick-up.

We will do our best to obtain quality plants from a reputable source. However, we are unable to provide a guarantee on their performance.

To obtain an order form or for additional information, call Cooperative Extension at 704-736-8452 or e-mail me at Kevin_Starr@ncsu.edu.

Divine Intervention? Tebow Throws for 316 Yards

DENVER, CO – It only took seconds for fans of the Denver Broncos' quarterback Tim Tebow to recognize the coincidence following the young star's dynamic overtime pass for a touchdown that led his team past the Pittsburgh Steelers in Sunday's AFC Wild Card game.

The Broncos beat the Steelers 23-29 in overtime when Tebow threw an 80-yard TD pass to Demaryius Thomas.

For a man that had been both praised and criticized for his faith, many thought it fitting that he threw for a total of 316 yards, which many Christians associate with one of the most popular scriptures of their faith, John 3:16.

The passage reads: "16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

The reference to Jesus Christ, whom Christians believe is the Savior for all of mankind, is a powerful testament to the faith and whom Tim Tebow professes to honor when he bows on one knee to pray publically during games and otherwise.

His outward demonstration of faith has been dubbed, "Tebowing", which is described at a fan's site as a verb which means: "to get down on a knee and start praying, even if everyone else around you is doing something completely different."

The statistic following the game had people on social media sites buzzing once again about the power of faith.

It would appear that Tim Tebow has garnered some favor from his maker and fitting that such a win and statistic should come on a “Sunday”.
