Nike to pay $1 million to Indonesian factory workers for unpaid hours

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 06:45 PM PST

JAKARTA (BNO NEWS) -- A group of Indonesian Nike factory workers have won a settlement against the sportswear company in which they will be awarded $1 million for unpaid overtime work hours, non-governmental organization (NGO) Educating for Justice said Wednesday.

The group of 4,437 workers from Nike's PT Nikomas sneaker factory located in Serang, the capital of Banten province, will be receiving the funds and are meant to cover almost 600,000 hours of overtime work during the past two years.

The settlement between the Serikat Pekerja Nasional (National Workers Union) and the factory management comes after a nearly year-long investigation and negotiation process. The workers will receive their payments in two installments, on January 20 and February 5.

However, despite the settlement victory, the NGO noted that years of forced and unpaid labor remains unsettled.

"While workers are pleased with the result, in reality they are owed millions of dollars more," Educating for Justice director Jim Keady stated. "The practice of forcing workers to do overtime without pay was actually happening for 18 years, but Indonesian law only allows redress for the past two years."

Nonetheless, both Keady and Serikat Pekerja Nasional Chairman Bambang Wirahyoso agreed that the significance of the settlement victory has "the potential to send shockwaves through the Indonesian labor movement."

"Now that a precedent has been established, Bambang and the leadership at SPN are gearing up to take on the fight for any other workers who have been subjected to forced overtime without pay," Keady added.

"This is justice served," Keady underlined, although he noted that "we have just begun."

Israeli hacker publishes credit card details of Saudis

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 06:37 PM PST

TEL AVIV (BNO NEWS) -- An Israeli hacker has published the credit card details of hundreds of Saudi nationals after a similar move by anti-Israel hackers last week, local media reported on Wednesday.

The Israeli hacker, who calls himself Omer Cohen or 0xOmer, published hundreds of credit card numbers, email addresses and phone numbers belonging to mostly Saudi nationals on Pastebin, a free text-hosting website, on Tuesday night. Last week, the details of about 15,000 Israeli credit cards were posted on the One sports website by a Saudi national who used the pseudonym OxOmar.

"This is just the beginning," 0xOmer told The Jerusalem Post on Wednesday. "We have over 300 Saudi credit card numbers in our possession... and over 10,000 personal details of people in Saudi Arabia, including full names, emails, and addresses. If they publish one more little detail on Israel, we will attack in full force and publish all of the credit card details".

Cohen said he would not publish the three-digit card security code, or CVC numbers, adding that his aim was only to warn anti-Israel hackers and deter them against future attacks. "I belong to a group of hackers named Israel Defenders," he said, adding the team is made up of four members.

He claimed that one of the members is an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier serving in Military Intelligence. "Many want to know how old I am, and some think I'm an adult. The right answer is that I'm 17," 0xOmer added.

Last week, Israeli credit card companies and the Bank of Israel scrambled to quickly disable credit card numbers compromised by the actions of OxOmar. The Bank of Israel said customers would not bear responsibility for any fraudulent use of their cards.

An international group of hackers claimed to have gained access to 400,000 Israeli credit card accounts before OxOmar published the credit card details of thousands of Israelis. They warned that they would continue to publish more account information already in their possession.

Passenger bus overturns in northern Afghanistan, killing 4

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 06:29 PM PST

MAZAR-I-SHARIF, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- Four people were killed on early Wednesday morning when a passenger bus overturned in northern Afghanistan, officials said. Dozens more were injured.

The accident happened at around 9 a.m. local time when the passenger bus overturned on the Kabul-Mazar-I-Sharif highway, located in the Khulm district of Balkh province.

Provincial Traffic Department chief Colonel Abdul Qadir told Pajhwok Afghan News that four people were killed as a result of the accident, while 50 others were injured and rushed to a hospital in Mazar-I-Sharif. The driver was not injured in the accident, he said.

Qadir said the death toll could still rise as some of the injured were reported to be in a critical condition, Pajhwok reported. The department chief also blamed the accident on speeding, although others suspect the driver may have fallen asleep.

In November 2011, fifteen people were killed when a passenger bus lost control and hit a motorcycle and two cars on the Kandahar-Herat highway in the Greshk district of Helmand province, which is located in southern Afghanistan.

Before that, in August 2011, a total of 34 people were killed when a bus rolled over in the Daman district of Kandahar province. Two dozen others were injured in what officials described as one of the country's worst traffic accidents in recent years.

According to the most recent figures released by the General Directorate of Road Care, road accidents on highways in Afghanistan killed more than 1,800 people in 2007. Many accidents in the country are blamed on the poor maintenance of roads and vehicles as well as dangerous driving.

Two heads found after vehicle set on fire in Mexico City

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 06:19 PM PST

MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) -- Two heads were found on early Wednesday morning after a vehicle was set on fire in front of a shopping center in Mexico City, officials said.

The incident happened on early Wednesday morning when a Honda CR-V was set on fire at one of the access gates to Mexico City's exclusive Santa Fe shopping center in front of the Palacio de Hierro department store. Security guards at the shopping center reported it to authorities.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and were able to put out the flames, only to discover two headless bodies inside the vehicle. A short time later, two heads were found a couple of feet (meters) from the vehicle.

Authorities believe the bodies and heads belong to the same people, but few details have been released. Authorities cordoned off the area and closed a part of the Mexico-Toluca highway as an investigation was carried out, officials said.

As Mexico continues to struggle to cope with an influx of criminals while President Felipe Calderón continues his campaign against organized crime and drug cartels, it is not uncommon for criminal groups to decapitate people and drop them off in public areas. According to official figures, at least 12,903 people died as a result of drug-related violence in the first nine months of 2011 alone.

On Monday, the bodies of thirteen people with gunshots to the head, among them at least three children, were dumped near a gas station in an area known as 'La Mangana' on the Suprema Junta Nacional Americana boulevard which is within the city limits of Zitácuaro, a city in the Mexican state of Michoacán.

Their bodies were dumped with a written message directed at 'El Guero,' which translates as 'The Blonde One' or 'Blondie.' No other details about the message were immediately released, but he is considered to be the apparent leader of an organized crime group which operates in Huetamo, a municipality in the southeastern corner of Michoacán.
