UPDATE 1 — NATO helicopter crashes in southern Afghanistan, killing 6

Posted: 19 Jan 2012 08:49 PM PST

KABUL (BNO NEWS) -- Six coalition service members were killed on late Thursday evening when a helicopter belonging to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) crashed in southern Afghanistan, officials said on Friday.

The accident happened around midnight local time when a CH-53 helicopter went down in Helmand province, which is home to mostly British troops. ISAF confirmed six of its service members were killed, but gave no details about their nationalities.

NBC News reported that the victims are believed to have been U.S. Marines.

It was also not immediately known what caused the accident or how many people were on board, or if any ISAF service members were injured. "The cause of the crash is under investigation, however initial reporting indicates there was no enemy activity in the area at the time of the crash," an ISAF spokesperson said.

Earlier this week, three crew members were killed when a U.S.-owned helicopter crashed in the Nad Ali district of Helmand province. The aircraft was conducting operations for the U.S. Department of Defense, although it was not part of the NATO-led force.

In August 2011, 30 U.S. and 8 Afghan service members were killed when a CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed in the Tangi Valley of Wardak province. The incident represented the highest number of U.S. forces killed during a single event since the U.S.-led war began in late 2001.

A report released by U.S. Central Command in October 2011 confirmed the crash was caused by an insurgent-fired rocket-propelled grenade which struck the CH-47's aft rotor-blade as the aircraft approached its landing zone. The investigation found no evidence of a pre-planned ambush.

Angry Gingrich Denies Asking 2nd Wife for ‘Open Marriage’

Posted: 19 Jan 2012 06:17 PM PST

An angry Newt Gingrich, during Thursday night's Republican presidential debate in South Carolina, faced tough opening questions about his former marital status,  denying he asked his ex-wife to allow him to have an "open marriage" while he had an affair with a staff member in 1999.

Gingrich, the former speaker of the House of Representatives, told debate moderator John King that he was "appalled" King would begin the debate on such a topic.

Gingrich also attacked what he described as the "elite" news media, calling it destructive, vicious and negative. He said the story about his troubled second marriage is false and he said ABC news, which reported the allegations, refused to talk to Gingrich associates.

Only four Republican candidates remain in the race to defeat President Barack Obama in November. Texas Governor Rick Perry dropped out hours before the debate after poor showings in the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary, leaving Gingrich, Texas Congressman Ron Paul, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum.

Romney defended himself from accusations that he cut jobs when he headed an investment firm that bought other companies. He said he actually helped companies create jobs, and said he would not apologize for being a successful businessman.

Santorum and Romney criticized Paul for his plans to cut military spending, while all the candidates criticized President Obama's health care plan and called for a crackdown on illegal immigration.

South Carolina holds its primary Saturday. The latest polls show Romney as the front runner, but with Gingrich surging.

Gingrich's second wife, Marianne, told ABC News that he asked her to "accept the fact" that he had another woman in his life. She said she refused his request for them to have an "open marriage." When he was speaker of the House of Representatives, Gingrich helped lead the movement in Congress to impeach then-President Bill Clinton for lying about an affair with a White House intern.

Also Thursday, Rick Santorum's candidacy got a boost when Republican officials in the state of Iowa said he won the most votes in the state's January 3 caucuses, not Romney. Initially, Iowa Republican officials said Romney won the caucuses by eight votes, and Santorum, a social conservative, came in second.

U.S. jobless claims drop to lowest since 2008 after holiday break

Posted: 19 Jan 2012 05:35 PM PST

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- After experiencing a significant rise in unemployment insurance claims following the holiday season, the U.S. saw its initial claims drop to its lowest level since 2008 this week, according the U.S. Labor Department (DOL) on Thursday.

The seasonally adjusted initial jobless claims in the week ending January 14 dropped to 352,000, a decrease of 50,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 402,000. The 4-week moving average was 379,000, a decrease of 3,500 from the previous week's revised average of 382,500.

A sharp rise in the beginning of the year is not uncommon as the job market tends to be unstable during the holidays. This week's figures are the lowest since April 2008, and even though it could benefit consumer spending, signs of improvement should continue in the coming weeks in order to actually represent an improving economy.

The DOL report also shows that the number of unemployed with unemployment insurance for the week ending January 7 was 2.7 percent, a decrease of 0.2 percent compared to the previous week.

There was also a decrease of 215,000 in the number of workers who claimed benefits under regular state unemployment programs, totaling 3,432,000 during the week ending January 7, according to the latest DOL report. The 4-week moving average was 3,576,250, a decrease of 34,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,610,250.

In the unadjusted, advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, the DOL report also showed a significant decrease, as it totaled 521,613 in the week ending January 14, a decrease of 124,606 from the previous week. There were 549,688 initial claims in the comparable week in 2011.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending December 31 were in Alaska (6.9), Connecticut (6.6), Oregon (5.0), Wisconsin (4.9), Pennsylvania (4.7), Idaho (4.5), Rhode Island (4.5), Montana (4.3), New Jersey (4.2), Arkansas (4.0), Illinois (4.0), and Washington (4.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending January 7 were in New York (+29,389), California (+22,168), Texas (+13,946), North Carolina (+7,865), and Georgia (+7,225) while the largest decreases were in Wisconsin (-7,657), Michigan (-5,208), Iowa (-4,675), New Jersey (-4,667), and Kentucky (-3,577).

Car bomber hits Kandahar airport, killing 7

Posted: 19 Jan 2012 05:25 PM PST

KANDAHAR, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least seven people were killed on Thursday afternoon when a suicide bomber attacked an airport in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, officials said. Several others were injured.

The attack happened at around 1 p.m. local when an individual driving in a car detonated his explosives outside an entry control point at Kandahar International Airport, which is being maintained by the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

Kandahar Governor spokesperson Zalmay Ayubi said the car bomber killed seven civilians and wounded at least eight others. Although the attack happened near an ISAF convoy, there were no reports of casualties among coalition service members.

Among those killed and injured were several children and a woman who was passing by when the attack occurred, officials said. Several vehicles nearby were destroyed.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the attacker's name was Ahmad. The credibility of the claim could not be verified as the Taliban frequently claim credit for the attacks of other groups.
