Former Irish priest sentenced to 3 years for child porn collection

Posted: 31 Jan 2012 05:48 PM PST

DUBLIN, IRELAND (BNO NEWS) -- A former priest and convicted child abuser was sentenced to three years in jail in Ireland on Tuesday for possessing child pornography, court officials told a local newspaper.

Oliver O'Grady, 66, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to three counts of possessing child pornography. Police said O'Grady possessed thousands of explicit images of children, some as young as two, which were stored on computers and USB drives.

Police also found more than six hours of child pornography videos and more than 500 pages of online discussions about children engaged in sex, the Irish Times reported. An audio file was also discovered in which O'Grady discussed religious matters and the sexual abuse of a male child.

"If people didn't download child pornography, there is a good chance that those children would not be abused in the first place, said Judge Martin Nolan, as quoted by the newspaper.

The images were discovered when O'Grady left his laptop on an Aer Lingus flight in 2010 and a staff member alerted police after coming across the files. Aer Lingus rules state that if lost property is not claimed within three months, the staff member who found it is allowed to keep it.

O'Grady was born in Limerick and emigrated to California after joining the priesthood. He was previously sentenced to 14 years in prison in California for abusing children while a priest. He was deported to his native Ireland in 2001 after serving seven years of his sentence.

After leaving the priesthood, he moved to the Dutch capital of Amsterdam for several years before returning to Ireland on the flight where he left his laptop behind.

UN: More than 1,500 migrants died in the Mediterranean in 2011

Posted: 31 Jan 2012 05:39 PM PST

NEW YORK/GENEVA (BNO NEWS) -- More than 1,500 people drowned or went missing while attempting to cross the sea from Africa to reach Europe last year, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported on Tuesday.

The deaths make the Mediterranean Sea the world's deadliest stretch of water for migrants and refugees, and the numbers released on Tuesday are the highest since UNHCR began to record these statistics in 2006.

"Our teams in Greece, Italy, Libya, and Malta, warn that the actual number of deaths at sea may be even higher," UNHCR spokesperson Sybella Wilkes told reporters in Geneva. She added that the UNHCR estimates were based on interviews with migrants who reached Europe by boat, telephone and e-mail communication from their relatives, as well as reports from Libya and Tunisia from survivors whose boats either sank or were in distress.

Large numbers of people have tried to reach Europe since early last year when pro-democracy protests erupted across North Africa and the Middle East. Some survivors have reported cases of abuse and torture experienced at the hands of other passengers during the journey.

"We renew our call to all shipmasters in the Mediterranean, one of the busiest stretches of water in the world, to remain vigilant and to carry out their duty of rescuing vessels in distress," Wilkes stated. She added that, despite poor weather conditions and high seas, three boats had already attempted the crossing in 2012, with one going missing at sea.

Of last year's arrivals by sea, 56,000 landed in Italy while Malta and Greece received 1,574 and 1,000 respectively. In addition, according to the Greek Government, an estimated 55,000 irregular migrants crossed the Greek-Turkish land border.

Bedouin tribesmen kidnap 25 Chinese workers in Egypt’s Sinai

Posted: 31 Jan 2012 05:34 PM PST

CAIRO, EGYPT (BNO NEWS) -- Bedouian tribesmen have kidnapped at least 25 Chinese workers in Egypt's central Sinai, officials at the Chinese embassy in Cairo told the Xinhua news agency on Tuesday.

The Chinese nationals, who work for a cement factory, were riding a bus to their plant when they were stopped by locals in the northern Sinai town of Arish. The 24 workers and a translator were then taken to a makeshift tent nearby, commercial affairs counselor of the embassy Ma Jianchun told Xinhua.

Chinese Ambassador Song Aiguo has urged Egyptian authorities to put the safety of the Chinese workers first, properly handle the incident and secure their release as soon as possible. Some of the workers have kept contact with the embassy through their mobile phone, and the group is believed to be in a good condition.

Egyptian security forces have rushed to the area to negotiate with local tribal leaders. The local people are demanding the Egyptian government release their relatives detained several years ago because of suspected involvement in attacks in south Sinai between 2004 and 2006.

Israel arrests Palestinian prisoner released in Shalit swap

Posted: 31 Jan 2012 05:20 PM PST

TEL AVIV (BNO NEWS) -- The Israeli military on Tuesday arrested a Palestinian man who was released in October 2011 as part of a prisoner exchange deal to secure the release of Gilad Shalit, officials said.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) arrested Mamun Ismyail Salame Stut on Tuesday for allegedly being a security threat in the area of Dura on the southern West Bank, but few other details were immediately released. He is the first released prisoner to be recaptured since the prisoner swap.

Stut, who was originally arrested in 2002, was sentenced to 38 years in prison for attempted murder, membership of an unidentified organization, assembling bombs and providing asylum. He was originally slated to be released in 2040.

Last year, Israel agreed to free 1,027 prisoners in exchange for the release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit who was held in Hamas captivity in Gaza for almost six years. During the first phase in October, Israel released 477 Palestinian prisoners, including participants of some of the bloodiest terrorist attacks of the last decade.

The second phase came in December when 550 additional Palestinian prisoners were released from Israeli prisons. Those released were required to sign a document in which they pledged not to engage in terrorist activity in the future, and Israeli officials said they would hunt down any released prisoners if they are found to have engaged in terrorism again.
