Fire at Burma refugee camp in Thailand leaves thousands homeless

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 08:19 PM PST

BANGKOK (BNO NEWS) -- A fire broke out on Thursday at a Burmese refugee camp in Thailand, leaving thousands of people homeless, authorities said.

The blaze started at around 10:30 a.m. and quickly swept through at least five quarters of Umpiem Mai refugee camp in Tak Province near the Thai-Burma border. The fire, swept along by the wind, spread through the camp and was still burning in late afternoon, Mizzima News reported.

The refugee camp is home to around 17,600 people. No deaths have been reported, but some children received burns in the fire.

Most of the houses in refugee camps are built of wood, bamboo and thatch. Several mosques, schools and markets were also destroyed.

"Because of the wind, it spread quickly," a survivor told Mizzima. "People, together with their children, ran helter-skelter toward open fields where there was safety. They couldn't carry anything."

The cause of the fire is still unknown. Fire officials and camp residents were still searching the debris and conducting an investigation.

The refugee camps along the Thai-Myanmar border house more than 140,000 people, according to the Thai Burma Border Consortium. Many of them fled ethnic conflict zones and have lived in the camps for decades.

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 08:19 PM PST

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY (BNO NEWS) -- Five people died in a raging house fire in South Plainfield, New Jersey, early on Thursday, authorities confirmed.

The fire broke out in a multistory former farmhouse where nine family members lived between 2:30 and 3 a.m. local time. At least four others were being treated for injuries, including an 8-year-old who was taken in critical condition to a nearby medical center, The Star-Ledger newspaper reported.

A family relative identified the woman killed as Ann Jefferson, who according to public records is 62. She also said that four of her sister-in-law's children were also killed in the fire.

The prosecutor said investigators are working to confirm the identities of those who died and are awaiting reports by the county medical examiner's office on the causes of death.

A next-door neighbor said the fire was raging by the time firefighters arrived. She said the home was a former farmhouse before the neighborhood began to be developed about 30 years ago. The home has been a two-family rental unit for at least the past 20 years

Two volunteer firefighters are also being treated for minor injuries they received in a two-vehicle crash while en route to the fire, which was reported at 3:09 a.m. local time.

The fire is under investigation by members of the prosecutor's office and the South Plainfield Police Department.

Kashmir avalanches kill 16 Indian soldiers

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 08:18 PM PST

SRINAGAR, KASHMIR (BNO NEWS) -- At least 16 Indian soldiers have been killed and nine others have been injured in two avalanches in Indian-administered Kashmir, officials said on Thursday.

The first avalanche hit the workshop area of the army brigade headquarters in the Gurez area of Bandipora district on Monday night. Thirteen soldiers died and three soldiers are still missing, while 13 others were rescued, the Indian Express reported.

Lt. Col J. S. Brar, a defense spokesman in Srinagar, said another avalanche hit an army post at Sonamarg in Ganderbal district. Three soldiers were killed, while six others, including two civil porters, were injured, the newspaper reported.

"This particular area is not normally avalanche prone and is cut off from the rest of the Valley in winter months," Brar said on Thursday. He added that rescue operations were hampered by heavy snowfall which continued through the day.

An official of the state's Disaster Management Cell said the avalanche damaged 25 Army vehicles and 17 barracks. Four abandoned residential houses and a school building were also damaged.

Avalanches are common in the disputed territory of Kashmir. Last month, eight soldiers were killed after an avalanche hit Kupwara district.
