EU further tightens sanctions against Syria

Posted: 27 Feb 2012 04:42 PM PST

BRUSSELS, Belgium (BNO NEWS)-- The European Union (EU) on Monday announced expanded sanctions and restrictive measures against Syria due to the continued government-sanctioned violence against civilians.

"Today's decisions will put further pressure on those who are responsible for the ruthless campaign of repression in Syria," said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton. "The measures target the regime and its ability to conduct the appalling violence against civilians. As long as the repression continues, the EU will keep imposing sanctions."

The European Council said it has reinforced its restrictive measures against the Syrian regime with trade in gold, precious metals and diamonds with Syrian public bodies and the central bank no longer being permitted. The EU also stated that cargo flights operated by Syrian carriers will not have access to EU airports, with the exception of mixed passenger and cargo flights.

In addition, the Council also froze the assets of the Syrian central bank within the EU, while "ensuring that legitimate trade can continue under strict conditions." Furthermore, the Council subjected seven ministers of the Syrian government, who are allegedly associated with the human rights violations, to an asset freeze and a visa ban.

Syria has been part of the wider Arab Spring movement which began in early 2011 and has been riddled by violence ever since. Pro-democracy demonstrations have spread across the country since mid-March, resulting in a fierce government crackdown.

According to the most recent figures released by the United Nations in January, at least 5,400 people have been killed as a result of violence during the uprising. Syrian human rights and opposition activists say the figure has since surpassed 8,000 and includes hundreds of children.

The Syrian government has repeatedly claimed that violent acts against protesters have been carried out by 'terrorists dressed as soldiers,' although international observers have rejected these claims. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad previously admitted that mistakes were made, but claimed protesters were no longer being targeted.

The incident occurred at around 7:30 a.m. local time at Chardon High School, which is located in Geauga County, around 30 miles (48.2 kilometers) east of Cleveland. Initial reports indicate that the gunman entered the school's cafeteria in the morning and opened fire as the school day began but before the first period.

Suicide attack at Afghan airport kills 9

Posted: 27 Feb 2012 04:03 PM PST

JALALABAD, Afghanistan (BNO NEWS) -- At least nine people were killed on early Monday morning when a suicide bomber hit an airport in eastern Afghanistan, apparently in retaliation for Qurans allegedly burned by U.S. troops. More than a dozen others were injured.

The attack occurred on Monday morning at the entrance of a NATO-led airfield near a highway in Jalalabad, a city in the eastern province of Nangarhar. Provincial officials said six civilians, two Afghan guards and an Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier were killed.

In addition to the fatalities, a spokesman for the governor's office said twelve people were injured in the attack, including two soldiers, one guard and nine civilians. Details about their conditions were not immediately released.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that it was done in retaliation for the controversial Quran burning by U.S. troops at the Bagram Airbase. As a result, a series of violent protests have been carried out in which dozens of people have been killed, including four U.S. soldiers.

"A martyr attacker of the Islamic Emirate (Taliban) this morning drove up to the gates of the airport at dawn and slammed his car into the facility as the invading forces were changing from night to morning guard duty," said Mujahid, who identified the suicide attacker as local resident Mujahid Ahmadullah. "Monday's attack inflicted severe fatalities and injuries on the local puppets based nearby the facility."

The U.S. Embassy in Kabul said it condemns the attack in the strongest possible terms. "Our condolences go out to the families of the innocent Afghans killed in this attack, including the members of the Afghan National Security Forces who died while protecting a U.S. installation," a statement said. "We are grateful for their sacrifice. We also wish a speedy recovery to all who were injured."
