LG Optimus LTE Tag Customizes Itself Using NFC Stickers
5:09:12 AMStan Schroeder

LG has upgraded its LG Optimus LTE Android smartphone with NFC and a very interesting feature, which automatically changes the device's settings depending on the context.

LG calls this new feature LG Tag+ (hence the name of the new device, LG Optimus LTE Tag), and it's similar to Sony's programmable SmartTags. It uses NFC (Near Field Communication) to communicate with special stickers or "tags" which you can stick pretty much anywhere - on your desk or the dashboard of the car, for example.

Then, you can program the phone to change its settings depending on the tag it last communicated with. For example, you could swipe the device over a tag on your car, and have it automatically turn on Bluetooth and GPS.

The rest of the specifications place this device in the upper echelon of Android phones. It sports a 1.2 GHz dual-core CPU, a 4.3-inch, 800x400 IPS display, a 5-megapixel camera and 16 GB of memory.

Surprisingly, all of this runs on now ancient Android 2.3 or Gingerbread, but an option to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich is promised for later. LG will launch the device in the Korean market, but the date and price have not been revealed yet.

Nokia Planning To Bring Its Social Apps To Android And iOS Too
3:46:34 AMPocketnow

Nokia has introduced its Pulse application in November of last year, a software bit which allows users to keep in touch taking advantage of the GPS functionality inside phones. With Pulse you can check in to places and share that info with only a closed group of other users.

However, Nokia's plans go beyond Nokia devices and those powered by Windows Phone 7. "These are social applications. To be social, you have to be on every platform", said Basak Ozer, Nokia's Lead for social and location applications. As such, Pulse will be coming soon to Android and iOS users too, though an exact launch date was not unveiled.

However, Nokia Pulse -- which is complementary to services like Facebook and Twitter -- is not the only app the Finnish company has in mind for its social and location offerings.

Sunday, February 19, 2012 5:39 PMAppAdvice

Presidents Day is a day in which we remember the Feb. 22 birthday of the U.S.'s first president, George Washington. Some people also use the day to celebrate Abraham Lincoln, who was born on Feb. 12. Still others honor the general office of the presidency, or other presidents.

Of course, there are also those who see Presidents Day as nothing more than a day off work to go shopping for deals. Whatever are your personal reasons for celebrating this holiday, here are some apps to help get you in the Presidents Day mood:

Driverless Cars of the Future Are Here Now [INFOGRAPHIC]
Sunday, February 19, 2012 4:02 PMCharlie White

Driverless cars? That's some kind of futuristic fantasy, right? Think again. Driverless car technology has taken giant leaps in the past few years -- in fact, you might see one driving right next to you any day now.

This tech won't come a moment too soon, either. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA), distracted driving killed 5,474 people in the U.S. in 2009, and that number is only going to get bigger and scarier.

As you can see in the infographic below, help is on the way. Even though ingenious autonomous cars are in the research stage right now, within the next few years you'll be able to buy one for yourself.

In fact, a lot of that technology is already finding its way into today's cars. You're already familiar with GPS, and many cars now have lane-departure warning systems and can park themselves.

The autonomous vehicle sounds spectacular, with the potential to almost eliminate accidents. But the key question: Will people accept the technology? Maybe not at first, but within a couple of decades, I predict we'll look back at the days of human driving and wonder how we subjected ourselves to such horrific dangers every day.

Think about it. This is exciting. Soon, you'll be able to sit in the driver's seat and read your iPad on the way to work (oh wait, you're already doing that?). Or you'll call your car to pick you up at the airport, just like cowboys used to do when they'd whistle for their horses.

Dive into this infographic, and look forward to our driverless future:

Is This Our First Peek at the iPad 3? [PICS]
Sunday, February 19, 2012 2:25 PMAlissa Skelton

Chinese blog Apple Daily claims to have leaked pictures of the iPad 3 before Apple officially planned to give its own sneak peek in early March.

The unconfirmed photos of the iPad 3 look similar to the iPad 2, but Apple Daily reports the iPad 3 will have a quad-core Apple A6 processor and 4G. The iPad 2 has 3G connectivity and a 1 Gigahertz dual-core Apple A5 processor.

Here's Apple Daily's comparison of the three iPads:

Apple Daily says the iPad 3 will have a 9.7-inch Retina Display -- the same size as the iPad 2's screenbut with 2048x1536 resolution instead of 1024x768 -- and the case allegedly has an 8-megapixel camera on the outer corner. MacRumors confirmed the Retina Display last week. The case has been improved and the screen resolution is the same as the screen on the iPhone 4S.

We're not sure if these iPad 3 pictures are real, but take a look for yourself. We will find out the truth on March 7 when Apple shows off the new tablet.

What New Yorkers Think of the Samsung Galaxy Note [VIDEO]
Sunday, February 19, 2012 1:06 PMPete Pachal

In the dreamworld of a Super Bowl commercial, the Samsung Galaxy Note isn't just a hot new phone -- it's pure gadget ambrosia, inspiring legions of everyday people to abandon their iPhones for the Note's extra-large screen, speedy 4G LTE connection and "awesome" stylus.

It's fantasy, of course, but does it even have a kernel of truth? We checked out the Galaxy Note earlier this week, yet somehow we weren't moved to scream from the rooftops how it changed our lives. But that could be just us. We decided to take to the streets of Manhattan to give the Samsung Galaxy Note a chance to recreate its Super Bowl glory.

Could the Note melt through the built-in skepticism of New Yorkers and persuade them to smile, cheer and perhaps break into song? Or would it provoke feelings of confusion or even disgust at its massive size and retro stylus? The video above reveals all.

If, after watching, you want to try out the Samsung Galaxy Note for yourself, just head over to your nearest AT&T store. The Note goes on sale today for the tidy sum of $299 with a two-year contract. Hey, the biggest smartphone ever -- with an incredibly fast mobile Internet connection -- doesn't come cheap. At least they throw in a stylus for free.

Enjoyed the video? Love, hate or are indifferent to the Galaxy Note? Discuss in the comments.
