European Union issues candidate status to Serbia

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 06:36 PM PST

BRUSSELS, Belgium (BNO NEWS) -- Leaders of the European Union (EU) on Thursday decided to issue candidate status to Serbia after it signed a treaty on the protection of Romanian minorities, officials said. It brings Serbia another step closer to becoming a member of the union.

European Commissioner Štefan Füle met with Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić on Thursday to discuss the current state of play in Serbia and in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. "If sufficient progress is achieved in time, it would be possible for the forthcoming Council to confirm positively a decision to grant candidate status to Serbia," Füle stated.

Later on Thursday, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy confirmed that the Council had decided to grant candidate status to Serbia after it signed a treaty with Romania on the protection of minorities. Romania had previously threatened to block Serbia's membership bid after complaining about the treatment of the ethnically Romanian Wallachian minority in Serbia.

European Commission President José Manuel Durão Barroso welcomed the decision to give candidate status to Serbia, which applied for EU membership in 2009. "The reality is that we are going to welcome next year a new member, and there are others that want to join this very important project: a project of freedom, responsibility and solidarity," he added.

In addition, Füle acknowledged the commitment of the Serbian leadership to the European integration process and emphasized the continuing expectation of the EU that the dialogue will be followed up. The Commissioner added that the dialogue should lead to "tangible results," underlining the importance of inclusive regional cooperation.

Less than two weeks ago, the EU described the latest agreements reached in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue as a 'major step forward' in bringing Serbia and Kosovo closer to the EU.

As Serbia has constantly refused to recognize Kosovo's independence, which was declared in 2008, the implementation of the integrated management for crossing points (IBM) will now allow Kosovo to be able to participate in regional meetings and not be represented by the United Nations (UN) mission in Pristina. In addition, details regarding the management of Serbia and Kosovo's shared borders as well as border crossing were agreed on.

Two U.S. soldiers killed by Afghan soldier, civilian

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 06:21 PM PST

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (BNO NEWS) -- Two American service members were shot dead Thursday by two Afghan gunmen, at least one of them an Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier, at a joint base in southern Afghanistan, officials said. The attackers were also killed.

The incident happened on late Thursday morning when two individuals, one of them an Afghan soldier and another in civilian clothing, opened fire at NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) soldiers at a joint base in Kandahar, the capital of the province which carries the same name.

As a result of the shooting attack, two U.S. soldiers were killed while a third U.S. service member was injured, although his or her condition was not immediately released. Security forces quickly returned fire, killing both assailants at the scene.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack and identified the Afghan soldier as Abd-ur-Rahman. "An Islam-loving Afghan soldier, out of true spirit of faith, shot and killed two American troops and wounded another," he said. "The U.S. invaders were killed in retaliation for [the] burning of the copies of Holy Quran by the American occupation forces [at] Bagram Airbase a couple of days ago, triggering a fierce widespread protest across the country."

U.S. troops have been accused of burning Qurans at the Bagram Airbase, triggering a series of violent protests across Afghanistan which have left dozens of people killed. Four U.S. soldiers were previously killed in attacks which were claimed to be retaliation attacks, forcing ISAF to recall all military advisers from Afghan ministries.

Thursday's deaths raise the number of coalition troops killed in Afghanistan so far this year to 60, according to official figures. A total of 566 ISAF troops were killed in Afghanistan in 2011, down from 711 fatalities in 2010.

Comatose Dutch Prince Friso flown to London hospital

Posted: 01 Mar 2012 06:01 PM PST

LONDON, England (BNO NEWS) -- Dutch Prince Johan Friso, who is in a coma after being critically injured in an avalanche in western Austria last month, was flown to a private hospital in London on Thursday, the Dutch government said.

Friso, 43, was skiing in the town of Lech on February 17 when he was hit by an avalanche and buried under the snow for about 25 minutes before he was rescued and resuscitated at the scene. Doctors have said that the oxygen deprivation has caused extensive damage to his brain, leaving him in a coma which he may never come out.

"His Royal Highness Prince Friso arrived today in London, which has been his home for many years," the Dutch government said in a statement on behalf of the royal family. He was taken to Wellington Hospital in London, the largest independent hospital in the United Kingdom, where he will be treated.

"This marks the beginning of a long and intensive period for the royal family and especially for the family of Prince Friso, who will attempt to begin the rehabilitation process," the statement said. "The family of His Royal Highness Prince Friso needs all the space to learn to cope with the medical situation of Prince Friso. That is why the family requests the media to continue to respect the needed privacy of the family."

Dutch Queen Beatrix, Friso's wife Princess Mabel and their children have also been flown to London. "The warm sympathy in the recent period has given me support and strength. My gratitude for this is great," Mabel said in her first public comments since the accident last month.

Friso is the second son of Queen Beatrix but is not in line for the throne since marrying Mabel in 2004 without the government's permission.
