Chinese security forces arrest hundreds, rescue 77 children in major trafficking bust

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 06:00 AM PST

BEIJING, China (BNO NEWS) -- Chinese police have arrested more than 300 suspects during a nationwide investigation into four child trafficking rings, the government announced on Friday. More than 70 abducted children were rescued.

China's Public Security Ministry said the operation began on early Wednesday morning and was carried out simultaneously by police forces across 20 provinces and autonomous regions in China. The joint operation resulted in the arrest of 310 suspects and the rescue of 77 abducted children.

According to the Ministry, the operation began in October 2011 when authorities discovered that two separate trafficking rings had been buying infants from Yunnan, Guangxi and Shanxi, among other areas, and selling them to clients in Shandong. At the same time, two other gangs were operating in southwestern Guizhou Province.

"After more than five months of painstaking investigation, the public security organs identified key members of the criminal gangs and networks," said a spokesperson for the Public Security Ministry, adding that Wednesday's operation involved more than 7,000 police officers.

Human trafficking remains a serious problem in China. Tens of thousands of young women have been kidnapped from poor regions and sold to rural families to marry single men. Trafficking in children is also a major problem and most victims are baby boys which are sold to sterile couples who are not qualified to adopt children.

Since last year, Chinese authorities have launched a fierce offensive against groups which traffic abducted women and children. According to official figures, police stopped 3,195 human trafficking gangs in 2011, leading to the rescue of 15,458 women and 8,660 abducted children.

Additionally, in an effort to discourage people from buying abducted children, those children which are rescued will no longer be allowed to stay with the family which bought them. As a result, buyers will lose both the child and the money they gave to the child trafficking gang.

MOKHOVOYE, Russia (BNO NEWS) -- Two adults and seven children were killed on late Friday morning when a fire broke out at an apartment building in western Russia, investigators said. A murder investigation has been launched.

The fire broke out at around 10:15 a.m. local time at a four-story residential building in the village of Mokhovoye, located in the federal subject of Perm. The fire quickly filled one of the apartments with thick smoke, killing nine people inside whose bodies were later found by firefighters.

A spokesperson for Russia's Investigative Committee identified the victims as a 34-year-old man, his wife, and seven children between the ages of 4 and 13. "According to a preliminary examination of the scene, the cause of the fire was arson," the spokesperson said, who added that the victims died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

"A group of experienced investigators, criminalists, fire technique experts and a forensic team have arrived from the city of Perm," the spokesperson said. "We will establish all the circumstances surrounding this incident, including the reasons which led to the tragedy. The criminal investigation continues."

FAA: U.S. air travel to nearly double by 2032

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 04:31 AM PST

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- Airline passenger travel in the United States is expected to nearly double in the next 20 years, reaching 1.2 billion passengers per year in 2032, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in its annual forecast on Thursday.

The FAA report forecasts that the total number of people flying commercially on U.S. airlines will increase by 0.2 percent to 732 million this year, then to 746 million next year. The number of airline passengers in the United States is expected to increase more rapidly in the following years, reaching 1 billion passengers in 2024 and 1.2 billion passengers in 2032.

Revenue Passenger Miles (RPM), which represents one paying passenger traveling one mile (1.6 kilometer), is forecast to nearly double over the next two decades, from 815 billion in 2011 to 1.57 trillion in 2032. The figures would represent an average increase of approximately 3.2 percent per year, indicating that U.S. passengers will also travel longer distances.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood said an increasing number of Americans are relying on air travel and underscored the need to implement the FAA's Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) to accommodate the projected growth. "Our investment in NextGen is the key to getting passengers and cargo to their destinations more safely, faster, and with less impact on the environment," he said.

Through NextGen, the FAA aims to transform the U.S. air transportation system with the use of satellite-based technology that will help passengers reach their destinations more quickly, increase air traffic capacity, and enhance safety. New, more precise routes will also reduce fuel burn, carbon emissions, and noise.

In addition to the increasing number of U.S. passengers, the report also shows that cargo traffic on U.S. airlines is projected to more than double over the course of the forecast, growing at an average rate of 4.9 percent per year. This increase is measured by Revenue Ton Miles (RTMs), that is, one ton of cargo flying one mile.

But while U.S. airlines can expect an increasing number of passengers, the forecast projects the strongest growth in general aviation in jet aircraft, which is expected to grow at a rate of 2.9 percent per year, with a 4 percent per year growth in hours flown.

Gunman opens fire at Pennsylvania psychiatric hospital, killing 1

Posted: 09 Mar 2012 04:00 AM PST

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (BNO NEWS) -- A gunman opened fire at a psychiatric hospital in Pennsylvania on Thursday afternoon, killing one person and wounding several others before he was shot dead by a campus police officer, local authorities said.

The unidentified shooter was carrying two semiautomatic handguns when he opened fire on the first floor of the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) in Pittsburgh, the second-largest city in Pennsylvania. The shooting began at around 1:40 p.m. local time.

Police said the gunman killed one person and wounded six others before he was shot dead by a campus police officer in a hallway at the hospital. A seventh victim suffered an injury not related to gunfire, although other details were not immediately released.

Five of the injured remained hospitalized on late Thursday while two others had already been released. Of those still hospitalized, who were identified as three males and two females between the ages of 35 and 64, two underwent surgery. The hospital said a 64-year-old woman and a 49-year-old man remain in a serious condition.

"I expect all of these patients to survive and do well," said Donald Yealy, chair of emergency medicine at UPMC. "As the busiest trauma center in the region, we prepare for this kind of multi-casualty situation." The hospital said the care of patients was not compromised because of the shooting, and many staff members volunteered to work extra shifts.

Authorities did not immediately identify the gunman, although early reports about a second gunman were found to be false. "This was a tragic day, a sad day, a senseless day in many ways," Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said during a press conference on Thursday night.

Ravenstahl praised the response of police officers, saying their quick response saved lives. "There's no doubt about it," Ravenstahl said. "We can't predict what would have happened if they hadn't acted so quickly, but there's no doubt their quick response saved lives."
