Ten severed heads found lined up in southwestern Mexico

Posted: 18 Mar 2012 07:44 PM PDT

TELELOAPAN, Mexico (BNO NEWS) -- Mexican authorities on early Sunday discovered ten severed heads lined up outside a slaughterhouse in southwestern Mexico, officials said on early Monday. They are believed to be the latest victims of drug-related violence in the region.

Police were sent to the area after a call came in at 6:30 a.m. local time that human heads were lined up on the sidewalk of a street outside a slaughterhouse in the municipality of Teloloapan, which is located in Guerrero state in southwestern Mexico. Responding officers found a total of ten severed heads.

Other body parts were not found at the scene or in the nearby area, but investigators identified the heads as seven males and three females. "The partial identification suggests the victims were between 20 and 35 years of age," a spokesperson for the state's attorney general's office said.

Two cardboards were also found at the scene, and officials said the text on it refers to conflicts between rival gangs although the exact contents were not immediately released. Teloloapan is located in a region where the La Familia cartel and its offshoot Los Caballeros Templarios are fighting for territory.

According to official figures, more than 50,000 people have died in drug-related violence since President Felipe Calderón launched an army-led crackdown on organized crime and drug cartels in late 2006. At least 12,903 people died between January and September 2011, although figures for the entire year are not yet available. This will likely bring the total figure for 2011 to more than 17,000, the highest annual number yet.

Indonesian police kill five terror suspects in Bali raids

Posted: 18 Mar 2012 05:23 PM PDT

DENPASAR, Indonesia (BNO NEWS) -- Counter-terrorism forces shot dead five people suspected of being involved in armed robberies and terrorism during two raids on late Sunday on the Indonesian resort island of Bali, local media reported on early Monday.

The first raid took place at around 10:15 p.m. local time when members of Indonesia's elite counter-terrorism unit Densus 88 stormed a room at the Lhaksmi Hotel in Sanur, a resort area in Denpasar which is popular with foreign tourists. The hotels in the area offer cheap rooms and staff rarely ask for valid identification from guests.

Bali Legislative Council member I Made Arjaya, whose family home is a short distance from the budget hotel, told The Jakarta Post that three people were shot dead by security forces. He said two other people were shot dead during a separate raid at a hotel room on Jalan Gunung Soputan in downtown Denpasar, about 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) from the first scene.

A Bali police spokesman confirmed the raids were linked, but declined to give other details. A police source at one of the scenes told The Jakarta Post that members of the group are believed to have carried out armed robberies in recent years to raise funds for terrorism. "We have tailed them for months before we carried out the raids," the source told the newspaper.

Bali Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Hariadi told the Jakarta Globe that police confiscated firearms and several rounds of ammunition from both locations, but declined to confirm whether explosives were found. A source told the newspaper that the group is believed to have entered Bali in February, prompting the police and military to go to their highest alert when their presence was detected on Saturday.

The resort island of Bali has been the target of deadly bomb attacks in recent years. More than 200 people, including 88 Australian citizens, were killed in October 2002 when three bomb blasts hit two nightclubs in the tourist district of Kuta while another targeted a U.S. Consulate. Another series of bombings in October 2005 left 26 people killed.

Tonga King Tupou V dies at Hong Kong hospital

Posted: 18 Mar 2012 04:37 PM PDT

HONG KONG (BNO NEWS) -- Tonga's King George Tupou V, whose reform introduced increased democracy to the South Pacific archipelago, died at a hospital in Hong Kong on Sunday after a long history of illnesses, the Tongan government announced on Monday.

A statement from the Tongan government said Tupou V, 63, died at a hospital in Hong Kong at around 3 p.m. local time. The statement said the cause of death was not immediately known, but the king has long suffered various illnesses and last year had a cancerous kidney removed during treatment in the United States.

The Matangi Tonga newspaper in Tonga, citing unidentified sources, said Crown Prince 'Aho'eitu 'Unuaki'otonga Tuku'aho was with Tupou V just before he died at the hospital. The king had been rushed to the hospital on early Sunday afternoon but died several hours later, the report said.

Tupou V, who was traditionally regarded as the descendant of the sky god Tangeroa, assumed the throne in September 2006 after the death of his father Tāufa'āhau Tupou IV. The South Pacific archipelago was shaken later that year by pro-democracy protests which turned violent, leaving at least eight people killed and destroying much of the capital Nuku'alofa.

As a result of the riots, the ceremonial aspects of Tupou V's accession did not take place until July and August 2008 as the king decided to focus on the reconstruction of the capital and advancing democracy. Shortly before being officially crowned, Tupou V announced his plans for early general elections during which citizens, for the first time in its history, were able to choose a majority of seats in the Legislative Assembly.

The early general elections took place in November 2010 and were praised by the international community. "You will choose your representative to the parliament and thus the first elected government in our country's long history," Tupou V told his citizens just before the elections. He described it as the 'greatest and most historic day for our kingdom.'

After the death of Tupou V, his younger brother 'Aho'eitu 'Unuaki'otonga Tuku'aho will now assume the throne. He previously served as Tonga's Prime Minister for more than six years and was the kingdom's High Commissioner to Australia until Tupou V died on Sunday.

UK accuses Iran of blocking new foreign office website

Posted: 18 Mar 2012 08:00 AM PDT

LONDON (BNO NEWS) -- The British government on Sunday accused Iran of blocking access to a foreign office website it launched earlier this week to reach out to the Iranian people. The Iranian government also blocked a similar website in December.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said the Iranian government blocked access to its 'UK for Iranians' website on Saturday, just three days after the website was launched in hopes of direct dialogue with the Iranian people. The website is similar to one launched by the United States last year, which Iran also blocked.

"I condemn this action by the Iranian Government," Hague said on Sunday, adding that the website was launched to reach out to Iranians to explain and discuss UK policy. "We have no quarrel with the Iranian people and regret that the Iranian authorities fear their own citizens' interaction and involvement with the outside world."

In late December, the Iranian government added the 'UK in Iran' website of Britain's Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to its list of censored websites. It contained information about British government policies and statements, including criticism of the human rights situation in Iran and the country's controversial nuclear program.

Hague on Sunday said the Iranian people have had to endure an 'ever-tightening stranglehold of censorship'. "The blocking of our website is only a very small part of what Iranians undergo daily: millions of websites blocked, access to e-mail services denied, international television channels jammed, films and theater productions closed down, books unpublished, traditional Persian literature rewritten and newspapers banned," he said in a statement.

Diplomatic relations between Iran and Britain reached a new low when hundreds of Iranian protesters stormed the British embassy and another British diplomatic compound in Tehran in November. Britain claimed the attack could not have happened without consent from Iranian authorities, and in response closed the embassy.

Hague also ordered the closure of the Iranian Embassy in London and expelled all its diplomats. Iran warned that Britain's closure of its embassy in London would have consequences, but it is unknown if the blocking of the UK websites are the direct result of the diplomatic crisis.

After the blocking of the 'UK in Iran' website in December, Britain's media regulator Ofcom in January decided to revoke the license of Iranian news channel Press TV. Ofcom, the government-approved regulatory authority for the TV and radio sectors, accused the English-language channel of breaking licensing rules because its editorial base is located in Tehran, not in London as had been indicated when it was granted the license.

Press TV called the move a "clear example of censorship" and pointed out that Ofcom, which calls itself independent, receives aid from the British government and the Secretary of State has the power to appoint or remove Ofcom's chairman and its members. Nonetheless, a spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office said the British government was not involved in the decision to revoke the license.
