Somalia: Six killed in mortar shells attack in Mogadishu

Posted: 19 Mar 2012 09:40 PM PDT

MOGADISHU, SOMALIA (BNO NEWS) -- At least six Somali civilians were killed at a refugee camp after mortar shells were fired near the presidential palace on Sunday.

The mortar shells were launched at around midnight on Sunday, striking the heavily crowded refugee camp and killing a family of four, including a father, mother, and two children who were sleeping inside their hut. A second round of shots killed another two civilians.

The Somali militant group al-Shabab claimed responsibility of the attack, saying that the mortar shells were targeting African Union and government soldiers at the country's Presidential Palace. However, the shells missed its target by around 300 (984 feet) to 500 meters (1,640 feet).

Al-Shabaab is the militant wing of the Somali Council of Islamic Courts which took over most of southern Somalia in the second half of 2006. Despite efforts from the Somali and Ethiopian governments, the group has continued its violent insurgency in southern and central Somalia.

Somalia has been without an effective government since Mohamed Siad Barre was overthrown two decades ago.

Jewish school shooting in southwestern France kills 4

Posted: 19 Mar 2012 09:39 PM PDT

TOULOUSE, FRANCE (BNO NEWS) -- Four people were confirmed killed, including three children, at a Jewish school shooting on Monday in southwestern France, local authorities said.

The incident occurred on Monday morning at the Ozar Hatorah school in the Roseraie District of Toulouse, France, when a man riding a scooter opened fire against the school as students began arriving.

According to Le Monde, a Rabbi was killed, along with his two children, while a third child reportedly died later. The children were aged 8, 6, and 3, although they were not students of the school. In addition, five others have been injured, two of them reported in serious condition.

The shooting comes just eight days after a soldier was shot dead in Toulouse as well. And last Friday, only four days after the first incident, a similar shooting in not far from Toulouse in Montauban, resulted in the death of another three soldiers.

During the attack, the shooter also arrived on a motorbike, and initial reports indicate that some of the bullets are of the same caliber as Monday's schools shooting. The attacker initially used an 11.43-caliber automatic weapon before switching to a 9 millimeter caliber firearm.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who arrived at the scene of the shooting along with Interior Minister Claude Gueant, has declared a national day of mourning.

At least 6 killed, 2 missing in Taiwan ship accident

Posted: 19 Mar 2012 09:39 PM PDT

TAIPEI, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- At least six people were killed when a cargo ship sunk off the northern coast of Taiwan on Monday, local media reported.

The Hai Hsiang No. 8 gravel ship, which was registered in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, departed Keelung Harbor for Hualien on Taiwan's eastern coast at around 2:40 a.m. local time, but it began experiencing mechanical failure around two hours later.

Coast Guard Administration officials told Focus Taiwan that the ship's crew informed the control center at Keelung Harbor at around 4:26 a.m. local time that the ship was listing, that is, was leaning onto one side. Emergency teams were dispatched immediately, but the ship sank quickly.

Officials said six of the thirteen crew members that were rescued at the site of the accident later died at nearby hospitals. Two of them were Taiwanese and four others were Indonesian. In addition, two more Taiwanese, the ship's captain and engineer remain missing.

According to one of the survivors, the captain of the 2,990-ton vessel, which was also carrying 4,000 tons of gravel, informed crew members to put their life vests on. However, the ship sank so quickly that there was no time to drop a life boat. The crew member sank with the ship, but was able to swim upwards before being rescued by coast guard officers.

Investigations are ongoing, but initial reports show that the ship was only carrying 15 crew members, one short of those required by harbor regulations. The ship was not carrying its first engineer, and the ship owner could be fined between NT 60,000 ($2,033) to NT 300,000 ($10,165).

Manning asks agent to seal deal with Broncos: report

Posted: 19 Mar 2012 02:43 PM PDT

Peyton Manning has asked his agent to complete a deal with the Denver Broncos, ESPN reported Monday, sending the four-time National Football League Most Valuable Player to a new team if talks succeed.

The report, citing unnamed sources, says former Indianapolis quarterback Manning spoke with Broncos vice-president John Elway, a retired Super Bowl champion quarterback for Denver, about a five-year deal worth $95 million.

“It’s crazy. It feels so surreal,” Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil said. “It is such a historic move for our organization. It’s going to be a great time.”

Tom Condon, Manning’s agent, must still finalize the deal, but the report said details were a formality and contract terms could be concluded in the next day or two.

Manning called Elway to tell him of his choice and also called the San Francisco 49ers and Tennessee Titans, his other finalist choices among the clubs that wooed him, to inform them of his decision, according to the report.

The Broncos will not play either the Indianapolis Colts, the team Manning led to a Super Bowl title, or the reigning Super Bowl champion New York Giants,
