Broncos deal Tebow to Jets

Posted: 23 Mar 2012 05:54 PM PDT

Tim Tebow, the quarterback phenomenon who led the Denver Broncos on an unlikely run to the NFL playoffs last season, was traded to the New York Jets on Wednesday.

One day after signing superstar quarterback Peyton Manning to a five-year contract, the Denver Broncos parted ways with the instigator of “Tebowmania”, who attracted the attention of American football fans by reviving the Broncos.

Denver was mired in a 1-4 slump to open the season when the Broncos turned to Tebow as their starter seven games into the season. Tebow went 7-4 and took the team into the playoffs for the first time in six seasons.

But Tebow was not done. He sparked Denver to a 29-23 over-time upset of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round before the clock struck midnight on his fairy-tale story, the New England Patriots ousting Denver 45-10 in round two.

The Jets, who sent Denver fourth-round and sixth-round 2012 NFL Draft picks to obtain Tebow and a seventh-round pick, had a front-row view of “Tebowmania” in a 17-13 loss last November during his remarkable turnaround of the Broncos.

European Union tightens sanctions against Syria

Posted: 23 Mar 2012 05:36 PM PDT

BRUSSELS, Belgium (BNO NEWS) -- The European Union (EU) on Friday announced increased sanctions against the Syrian regime due to its continued use of violence against civilians and pro-democracy protesters.

"The repression has reached totally unacceptable levels of violence and must stop immediately," said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton. "Today's decisions aim to weaken the regime's resources and its ability to conduct its brutal campaign," she added.

The EU said its Council targeted 12 people associated with the repression or supporting or benefiting from the regime with a ban on entering the EU. The assets of the same individuals, who include the wife of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and of two additional entities will be frozen within the EU.

With Friday's increased sanctions, the number of designated people rose to 126, while the total number of targeted entities reaching 41.

Since the Syrian regime began to violently repress the uprising in 2011, this is the thirteenth time that the EU imposes sanctions against the country. It is estimated that more than 8,000 people have been killed since the start of the conflict in March 2011.

Two deaths reported after Tuesday’s earthquake in Mexico

Posted: 23 Mar 2012 05:00 PM PDT

ACAPULCO, Mexico (BNO NEWS) -- Two deaths were reported on Friday after a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Mexico on Tuesday, damaging tens of thousands of houses.

The first victim, identified as Ernesto Bernal Ruiz, died after being crushed by a falling wall in the small community of El Tamale in Guerrero state. In a separate incident, 90-year-old Juan Chute Bruno from San Nicolas, also in Guerrero, died of a heart attack caused by the earthquake.

In addition to the fatalities and 11 people who were previously reported injured, at least 15,000 people have lost their homes in the state of Oaxaca, where damages caused by the earthquake are estimated to succeed 90 million pesos ($7 million). In Guerrero, Governor Ángel Aguirre Rivero requested assistance to provide 10,000 residential homes for those affected, as well as 20,100 reconstruction packages for damaged homes.

According to the United States Geological Survey's (USGS) preliminary earthquake report, the epicenter of the quake, which had a depth of 17 kilometers (10.5 miles), was in the state of Guerrero, around 186 kilometers (115 miles) east of the popular port city of Acapulco and about 25 kilometers (16 miles) east of Ometepec, both in the same state.

The strong earthquake was felt up to Mexico's central region, causing numerous buildings in Mexico City to be evacuated.

On Thursday, a 5.4-magnitude aftershock shook Mexico City residents again, causing the evacuation of several office and residential buildings in the city's business district on Reforma Avenue and Insurgentes Avenue.

On September 20, 1985, one of the most devastating earthquakes struck the coastal area of Michoacan, although most of the damage was seen in Mexico City. Initial government reports indicated that some 6,000 to 7,000 people died, although further investigations revealed that approximately 10,000 people died.
