UPDATE 1 — Powerful earthquake strikes central Chile, injuring 3

Posted: 25 Mar 2012 05:37 PM PDT

TALCA, Chile (BNO NEWS) -- A powerful earthquake struck the central region of Chile on early Sunday evening, injuring at least three people and prompting a brief tsunami alert for coastal areas, officials and witnesses said. There were no reports of fatalities.

The 6.8-magnitude earthquake at 6:37 p.m. local time (2237 GMT) was centered about 27 kilometers (16 miles) north-northwest of Talca, the capital of the province which carries the same name. It struck about 40.7 kilometers (25.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the Chilean Seismological Service.

Seismologists initially said the earthquake had struck offshore, prompting the country's National Office of Emergency of the Interior Ministry (ONEMI) to issue evacuation orders for coastal areas covering hundreds of miles (kilometers) between Concón in the Valparaíso Region and Lebu in the Bío-Bío Region. The evacuations were quickly canceled after it became clear that the quake was centered on land.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), which measured the strength of the earthquake at 7.1 magnitude, estimated that some 9,000 people near the epicenter may have felt 'very strong' shaking which could potentially result in moderate to heavy damage. It estimated that more than 13 million others in the wider region may have felt weak to strong shaking.

Chilean Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter said there were no immediate reports of fatalities, but at least three people were said to be injured. One person was injured in the Bío-Bío Region as a result of a traffic accident caused by the earthquake, and two others were injured in the commune of Maipú in Santiago Province when part of a roof collapsed at the Votive Temple.

Numerous buildings were said to be damaged as a result of Sunday's earthquake, which lasted approximately one minute, but there were no immediate reports of major damage. The Chilean Interior Ministry said thousands of people were without power in areas near the epicenter, and mobile phone services were briefly interrupted.

Chile is frequently struck by large earthquakes. On May 22, 1960, the 'Great Chilean earthquake' struck the coast of central Chile. The 9.5-magnitude earthquake, the largest earthquake ever instrumentally recorded, left between 490 and 5,700 people killed.

And on February 27, 2010, an epic 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck approximately 95 kilometers (60 miles) northwest of Chillan, offshore of Bio-Bio, at a depth of about 35 kilometers (21.7 miles). The earthquake, along with a resulting tsunami, left at least 525 people killed and more than 12,000 others injured while damages were estimated at $30 billion.

Powerful 7.2-magnitude quake strikes off central Chile

Posted: 25 Mar 2012 04:02 PM PDT

TALCA, CHILE (BNO NEWS) -- A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of central Chile on early Sunday evening, seismologists and witnesses said, prompting authorities to evacuate coastal areas.

The 7.2-magnitude earthquake at 6:37 p.m. local time (2237 GMT) was centered about 32 kilometers (20 miles) north-northwest of Talca, the capital of the province which carries the same name. It struck about 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

According to the country's National Office of Emergency of the Interior Ministry (ONEMI), the earthquake was widely felt in the region and advised residents along coastal areas near the epicenter to evacuate to higher ground as a precaution. It was not immediately clear if an official tsunami warning had been issued.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a tsunami alert, but said earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within 100 kilometers (62 miles) of the epicenter. "Authorities in the region should be aware of this possibility and take appropriate action," the center said in a bulletin.

Other details were not immediately available.

House fire in West Virginia kills 2 adults, 6 kids

Posted: 25 Mar 2012 02:03 PM PDT

CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA (BNO NEWS) -- At least eight people were killed, including six children, after a house in West Virginia caught fire, local authorities said on Sunday.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday morning at around 3:25 a.m. local time at a home in Charleston, West Virginia. Local police told the Charleston Gazette that two sisters, 26-year-old Lisa Carter and 24-year-old Latasha Jones Isabell, lived in the house with their seven children.

The fire killed Carter and her boyfriend, who was spending the night at the house, although he did not live there. In addition, all of the six children killed were under eight years old. A seventh infant was taken to a local hospital where he is currently on life support and not expected to live.

Isabell was outside the house when the fire began and was uninjured from the incident.

Charleston Mayor Danny Jones visited the area on Saturday morning and compared the incident to a 1949 Woolworth department store fire in which seven firefighters lost their lives, the newspaper reported.

Investigations are pending in order to determine the exact cause of the fire although a candle had been lit during the evening near the place where the fire began, in the middle of the two-storey home's main level. Kanawha County Prosecutor Mark Plants said criminal investigations will also be conducted.

Nonetheless, authorities took note that the people inside had no chance of being alerted with no functioning smoke detectors. Charleston laws require periodic inspections once every 24 months to determine whether rental properties are under compliance.
