Huge quake off Indonesia prompts tsunami warnings

Posted: 11 Apr 2012 02:40 AM PDT

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- A major earthquake struck off the west coast of northern Sumatra on early Wednesday afternoon, seismologists said, prompting tsunami warnings for multiple countries.

The 8.7-magnitude earthquake at 2:38 p.m. local time (0838 GMT) was centered about 434 kilometers (269 miles) southwest of Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province on the northern tip of Sumatra. It struck about 33 kilometers (20.5 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

It was not immediately known if a tsunami was generated, but authorities in Indonesia immediately issued a tsunami warning for local coastlines as a precaution. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a warning, but issued an Indian Ocean-wide tsunami watch until it is known if a tsunami is generated.

"Earthquakes of this size have the potential to generate a widespread destructive tsunami that can affect coastlines across the entire Indian Ocean basin," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin. "However - it is now known that a tsunami was generated. This watch is based only on the earthquake evaluation."

UK police arrest Albanian crime boss Sadushi in London

Posted: 10 Apr 2012 05:08 PM PDT

LONDON (BNO NEWS) -- British police on late Tuesday arrested Albanian crime boss Ndrieim Sadushi, one of the most wanted fugitives in Europe, who managed to elude police for more than a decade, officials said on Wednesday.

A Scotland Yard spokesperson said Sadushi, 41, was arrested by the department's Extradition Unit in the Southgate area of north London on Tuesday evening. "Sadushi was arrested outside his home address," the spokesperson said, referring to a property at High Road in the London Borough of Enfield.

According to the UK Border Agency, Sadushi is believed to have entered England illegally in the back of a truck in 2000. He is wanted by Albanian authorities in connection with three murders and an attempted murder in Albania in 1997. He is also wanted by Italian authorities for money laundering and drug trafficking offences.

Sadushi led the notorious Kateshi gang which terrorized Albania in the late 1990s, and the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) previously issued a Red Notice to its 190 member countries to seek his arrest. He was one of the most wanted fugitives in the United Kingdom, Albania and Europe as a whole.

Sadushi is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court for an extradition hearing later on Wednesday.

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least twenty people were killed and more than 60 others were injured Tuesday morning when suicide bombers carried out three separate attacks in southern and western Afghanistan, officials said.

The first attack occurred at around 8:45 a.m. local time when two suicide bombers detonated their car bomb in front of the Guzra district headquarters in Afghanistan's western province of Herat. Police said the bombers initially tried to enter the headquarters but detonated their explosives after being turned away.

The powerful explosion killed at least three police officers and nine civilians who were waiting in line to see local officials. In addition to those killed in Guzra district, more than 55 civilians and police officers were injured, including some who were reported to be in a critical condition.

About two hours later, a group of three attackers crashed their explosives-laden vehicle into the Musa Qala district police headquarters in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province. Two other suicide attackers who attempted to raid the building following the attack were shot and killed by officers.

Four police officers were killed in the attack on the police headquarters, while another four police officers were killed when a suicide bomber targeted a nearby bazaar in Musa Qala. Several people, including police officers, the district police commander, and civilians, were also injured in the second Musa Qala attack.

Death toll reaches 22 after Nigerian church collapses

Posted: 10 Apr 2012 12:28 PM PDT

MAKURDI, NIGERIA (BNO NEWS) -- The death toll has risen to at least 22 after a Catholic church in rural Nigeria collapsed ahead of a vigil over the Easter weekend, officials said on Tuesday. More than 30 others were injured.

The incident occurred at around 9 p.m. local time on Saturday when hundreds of worshipers were waiting for the priest to start the evening's mass to celebrate the death and resurrection of Christ. People from across the region had gathered at the church to celebrate Easter.

But panic broke out when the weather condition quickly deteriorated, with strong winds and heavy rains hitting the area, prompting people to flee inside the hall of the church to seek shelter. A strong wind gust caused the roof of the building to collapse shortly after, burying dozens of worshipers.

A police spokesman said at least ten people died at the scene of the incident, but officials confirmed on Tuesday that the death toll had risen to at least 22 after several people died as a result of their severe injuries. More than 30 people were injured in the collapse, although their conditions were not immediately known.
