Mexico’s Popocateptl volcano spews out ash and rocks

Posted: 18 Apr 2012 06:50 PM PDT

PUEBLA, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano on Wednesday continued its increasing activity, spewing out dense ash clouds and volcanic material.

On Wednesday morning, at around 6:35 a.m. local time, Popocateptl - which is located around 55 kilometers southeast of Mexico City and on the outskirts of three different states, namely Puebla, Morelos and the State of Mexico - began spewing out thick ash clouds and fragments of incandescent volcanic material over one kilometer high.

Volcanic rocks rolled down its northern and northeastern slopes some between 500 and 800 meters. As a result, local authorities have placed a safety zone measuring twelve kilometers in radius from the volcano's crater.

Mexico's National Disaster Prevention Center (Cenapred) has been monitoring the volcano's activity after its status was recently upgraded to phase II within the Yellow Alert level. Mexico's alert levels begin with two phases within the Green Alert level, followed by three Yellow Alert phases, which preceed the final two Red Alert phases.

According to the alert system, Popocateptl's current status shows that the volcano's explosive activity has reached an intermediate to high level as ash clouds have been constantly been affecting nearby communities. The status also warns locals to prepare for evacuation with its increased explosive activity and a posible eruption of magma.

The closest community belongs to the municipality of Ecatzingo in the State of Mexico, which is located approximately 19 kilometers from the crater. Nervous residents have been warned to stay alert for further indications. While the state Education Ministry ordered the suspension of classes, schools remained open.

Fourteen mutilated bodies found in Mexico border city

Posted: 18 Apr 2012 06:41 AM PDT

NUEVO LAREDO, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- Fourteen mutilated bodies were found Tuesday inside an abandoned vehicle in a Mexican city on the border with the U.S. state of Texas, officials said on early Wednesday. The killings are believed to be related to the country's so-called drug war.

The fourteen bodies were discovered on early Tuesday morning in a vehicle which was left near a government office in the Mexican border city of Nuevo Laredo, which is located in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas and lies directly across the U.S. city of Laredo.

State officials said a telephone call led security forces to the gruesome discovery inside a parked 1996 Chrysler Voyager. When security forces arrived and opened the vehicle, they found ten black plastic bags which contained the dismembered remains of fourteen people.

A written message was found along with the bodies, but details about the content were not immediately released. The state's General Attorney's office said the victims, whose bodies were transported to the Forensic Medical Service for autopsies, are believed to be men between the ages of 30 and 35.

As the Mexican drug war continues, the country's Attorney General office (PGR) has said at least 12,903 drug-related killings were reported between January and September 2011, although figures for the entire year are not yet available. This will likely bring the total figure for 2011 to more than 17,000, the highest annual number yet.

Eight civilians killed in Sudan’s weekend bombings of South Sudan

Posted: 18 Apr 2012 06:20 AM PDT

DARFUR, SOUTH SUDAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least eight civilians were killed and nearly two dozen others were injured when Sudanese forces carried out airstrikes in the newly-independent nation of South Sudan, officials said on Tuesday.

Sudanese forces have carried out bombing raids in civilian areas of South Sudan since last weekend, including five explosions which hit Bentiu in Unity state and the town of Mayom where a logistics base of the United Nations (UN) Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is located.

According to UN officials, at least eight civilians are believed to have died in the attacks while 22 others were injured, some seriously.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay condemned the 'indiscriminate aerial bombing,' adding that in the past week, the UN has seen intensified use of Antonov war planes as well as fighter jets dropping bombs and launching rocket attacks, including in areas close to the offices of international organizations.

"Such deplorable attacks must stop immediately," Pillay demanded, reiterating the UN's deep concern over continuing hostilities between the two countries, including the impact of the conflict on civilians. Pillay also voiced alarm at South Sudan's 'unwarranted occupation' of the oil-producing region of Heglig in Sudan's South Kordofan state, as well as reports of a dramatic build-up in the number of northern militia in the disputed Abyei area over the past few days.

In addition, Pillay supported the call by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to convene a planned presidential summit of the two countries as soon as possible. She also called for a renewed commitment, from both sides, to the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement, which formally ended 22 years of civil war between Sudan and South Sudan, before the latter's independence last year.

UNMISS chief Hilde Johnson also called on both parties to "abide by international human rights and humanitarian law, protect civilians and guarantee the safety of international aid organizations and United Nations personnel and assets."

World Bank chooses U.S. candidate Jim Yong Kim as new president

Posted: 18 Apr 2012 06:09 AM PDT

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- U.S. candidate Jim Yong Kim has been chosen as the World Bank's next president, succeeding American Robert Zoellick who has served in the position at the 187-member development agency for nearly five years.

"I am honored to accept the Executive Directors' decision to select me as the next President of the World Bank Group," Kim said. "I am delighted to succeed Robert Zoellick, who has served with excellence and distinction during the last five years, and I am grateful to the Bank's member countries for the broad support I have received."

Kim, 52 and born in the South Korean capital of Seoul, was initially nominated by U.S. President Barack Obama in late March. "The World Bank is one of the most powerful tools we have to reduce poverty and raise standards of living around the globe, and Jim's personal experience and years of service make him an ideal candidate for this job," Obama said in March.

Kim, who said he will seek a 'new alignment' of the World Bank Group, is set to take office on July 1. "Together, with partners old and new, we will foster an institution that responds effectively to the needs of its diverse clients and donors; delivers more powerful results to support sustained growth; prioritizes evidence-based solutions over ideology; amplifies the voices of developing countries; and draws on the expertise and experience of the people we serve," said Kim.

Kim gathered the approval of the 25-member board in a unique manner, as the presidency was challenged by other candidates for the first time ever. Nigerian finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Colombian finance chief Jose Antonio Ocampo eventually withdrew from the race last week.

The World Bank has had American presidents throughout its over 60 years of history.
