Posted: 25 Apr 2012 06:19 PM PDT

MAKASSAR, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- Two Muslim teachers were arrested by Indonesian police on Wednesday for allegedly sexually abusing a young boy on the island of Sulawesi, local media reported.

The two suspects, identified only as A. J. and A. H., who teach Koran recitals, were allegedly caught by a local resident in the Gowa district of South Sulawesi when they removed the trousers of an 8-year-old boy on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred in a room on the second floor of a local mosque.

However, instead of notifying the authorities of the incident, residents gathered and waited until around 2 a.m. local time before storming into the mosque in order to carry out mob justice. The two suspects were able to flee until reaching a police station where they were later taken into protective custody before being transferred to the Gowa Police headquarters.

Police spokesman Adjutant Commander Andry Lilikay told the Jakarta Globe that the suspects confessed to having sodomized the minor boy at least six times, convincing him to comply for Rp 10,000 ($1.09). The suspects are facing a minimum prison term of 15 years as Andry said they would be charged under the Criminal Code and the 2002 Law on Child Protection.

Earlier this month, on April 12, another Muslim teacher was arrested in the Bulukumba district of South Sulawesi after he allegedly molested a female student at a state junior high school.

11 die when passenger van plunges into gorge in Pakistan

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 06:14 PM PDT

MUZAFFARABAD, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- A passenger van plunged into a gorge in northern Pakistan on early Wednesday morning, killing at least eleven people and injuring several others, local authorities said.

The accident happened near the city of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan's Azad Kashmir region, which is located on the banks of the Jhelum and Neelum rivers, when the vehicle plunged down a gorge. The passenger van was carrying at least 21 people.

A police official told the Nation that the accident occurred at a sharp turn when the driver of the passenger vehicle lost control, causing the van to nosedive some 300 feet (91.4 meters) down the gorge. At least eleven people were killed while ten others were injured, although some reports put the death toll at twelve.

Police believe the accident may be the result of a technical failure, but other details were not immediately released.

Road accidents are common in Pakistan with more than 5,500 fatalities in 2007, according to the most recent figures released by national police. Many accidents are the result of poor infrastructure and the disregard of traffic laws.

On March 27, fifteen people were killed and 40 others were injured when a speeding passenger bus overturned near Safdarabad in Sheikhupura District of Punjab province, located in eastern Pakistan. The driver of the bus, which was carrying 55 people, had lost control while attempting to make a sharp turn.

And in early February, eleven people were killed when a passenger van went off a road and plunged down a ravine in Sher Bangal, which is located in the Upper Dir district in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. The nine other people on board were injured and taken to a local hospital.

UK police: Madeleine McCann may ‘still be alive’ 5 years after kidnapping

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 04:46 PM PDT

LONDON, ENGLAND (BNO NEWS) -- British police have uncovered new evidence which suggests missing girl Madeleine McCann may have been abducted and is currently living with her abductor, five years after the incident, officials said on Wednesday.

McCann was almost four years old when she was kidnapped on May 3, 2007, while vacationing at a holiday apartment in the beach resort of Praia de Luz in Portugal. "As a result of evidence uncovered during the review, [detectives] now believe there is a possibility Madeleine is still alive and are appealing for anyone who is able to provide direct information as to her whereabouts to contact the team," police said in a statement.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), which is best known as Scotland Yards, also released an age progression image of Madeleine on Wednesday. The image was released after close collaboration with the parents of Madeleine, whose ninth birthday approaches on May 12.

Investigative efforts have been carried out in close collaboration with a senior investigating officer from Portugal's Policia Judaria and British detectives have traveled to the country on several occasions. Officers are currently reviewing approximately 40,000 pieces of information equating to approximately 100,000 pages in the investigative process. In addition, they have also identified around 195 items within historic material which are also believed to be 'genuinely new material.'

The objective of the review team is to work with the Portuguese authorities with a view to having the case, which has remained closed since 2008, re-opened in due course. "We are working on the basis of two possibilities here," said Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood. "One is that Madeleine is still alive; and the second that she is sadly dead."

"Based on the former we are releasing the age progression image today with a specific appeal," Redwood added, requesting anyone who has new direct information or evidence regarding McCann's whereabouts to contact authorities.
