Euro 2012: Dutch gov’t threatens to boycott matches in Ukraine

Posted: 01 May 2012 06:53 PM PDT

THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS (BNO NEWS) -- Dutch government officials and the royal family will not attend football matches in Ukraine during Euro 2012 if the conditions of imprisoned opposition leader and former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko do not improve immediately, the country's foreign minister said on Tuesday.

Ukraine and Poland will co-host the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship in June, but the international community has slammed the Ukrainian government for the imprisonment and alleged physical abuse of Tymoshenko, who was sentenced to seven years in prison last year for alleged abuse of power.

"Ukraine should now understand what it has to do. The treatment and trial of Tymoshenko has to meet international standards," said Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal on Tuesday. He said the Dutch cabinet sees it as a duty for the Ukrainian government to improve its human rights situation, especially as it will host Euro 2012 and chair the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) next year.

Earlier on Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she is 'deeply concerned' by the treatment of Tymoshenko and other imprisoned members of her former government. Photos of Tymoshenko became public last week in which she is seen showing bruises on her body after claiming she has been physically abused by prison guards while being transferred to receive treatment for a severe spinal condition. Reports indicate that she has been diagnosed with a herniated spinal disc.

Tymoshenko, 51, is serving a seven-year term for abuse of power in connection with a 2009 gas deal with Russia. She was accused of illegally forcing state energy company Naftogaz to sign a gas supply contract with Russian gas company Gazprom in 2009, which the new government says required approval of the Cabinet of Ministers.

Tymoshenko has claimed her trial is politically motivated and an attempt by President Viktor Yanukovych, who narrowly beat her in the presidential election in February 2010, to bar her from future elections. The international community has largely condemned her trial and called for her immediate release.

UK police arrest seven on suspicion of funding terrorism

Posted: 01 May 2012 06:18 PM PDT

LONDON, ENGLAND (BNO NEWS) -- British police on early Tuesday morning arrested seven people on suspicion of financing terrorism in Somalia by smuggling the drug khat to the United States and Canada, officials said.

The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), which is better known as Scotland Yard, said six men and one woman were arrested in various parts of London at around 6 a.m. local time on Tuesday. "The arrests were a part of a pre-planned, intelligence-led operation, into suspected fundraising for terrorism overseas," the force said in a statement.

Police believe the seven suspects are part of a network suspected of illegally exporting the stimulant khat, which is legal in the United Kingdom, to the United States and Canada where it is a controlled substance. Homeland Security Investigations, the investigative branch of U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), was also part of the investigation.

"We are not prepared to discuss at present where overseas funding is allegedly being sent," a Scotland Yard spokesperson said. A U.S. official however, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the khat was smuggled from Africa to Britain and then to the U.S. and Canada. Funds raised were then used to finance terrorism in Somalia, which has been without an effective government since Mohamed Siad Barre was overthrown two decades ago.

Scotland Yard said the seven suspects are aged between 30 and 49, but their identities were not immediately released. "They have been taken to a central London police station where they remain in custody," the spokesperson said, adding that search warrants were being executed at eleven residential addresses and one business premises.

Although unrelated, Tuesday's arrests came exactly a week after five men from Luton, a large town about 27 miles (45 kilometers) northwest of London, were arrested on suspicion they were preparing acts of terrorism. Four of the men were charged with a number of terrorism offenses on Monday, and the fifth man was released without charge.

U.S. Secretary of State Clinton expresses concern for Tymoshenko

Posted: 01 May 2012 03:42 PM PDT

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday expressed her concern for the treatment of imprisoned Ukrainian opposition leader and former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who was allegedly assaulted by guards last month.

Clinton said the American government is 'deeply concerned' by the treatment of Tymoshenko and other imprisoned members of her former government. "The photographs of Mrs. Tymoshenko released by the Ukrainian Human Rights Ombudsman further call into question the conditions of her confinement," she said, urging Ukrainian authorities to ensure that the former leader receives immediate medical assistance in an appropriate facility.

Photos of Tymoshenko became public last week in which she is seen showing bruises on her body after claiming she has been physically abused by prison guards while being transferred from Kachanivska women's penal colony No.54 in Kharkiv to the Ukrzaliznytsia Central Clinical Hospital in Kharkiv in order to receive treatment for a severe spinal condition. Reports indicate that she has been diagnosed with a herniated spinal disc.

Clinton on Tuesday also called for U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John F. Tefft to be given access to Tymoshenko. "We continue to call for her release, the release of other members of her former government and the restoration of their full civil and political rights," Clinton added.

Three women found buried in northern Mexico

Posted: 01 May 2012 03:17 PM PDT

SALTILLO, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- The burnt bodies of three women were discovered in a shallow grave in northern Mexico on Tuesday morning, prosecutors said. It is unknown if they are victims of Mexico's drug war, which has claimed thousands of lives.

Local agricultural workers who were walking toward 'Los Muchachos' lake discovered the grave when they found a body which had been partly buried near the San Juan del Retiro ranch in the municipality of Arteaga in the northern state of Coahuila.

The laborers reported the discovery to police, after which a team of police investigators, members of the Attorney General's Coroner Service, and a Public Ministry agent reached the scene, which is located near the kilometer 279 marker on federal highway 54 toward Zacatecas.

When examining the scene, the team found the grave was approximately 4 meters (13.1 feet) wide and held the bodies of three women. The victims, who are believed to be between the ages of 20 and 30, were half naked and their bodies showed signs of burns.

Authorities are continuing their investigation.

Bus fire in western Indonesia kills 13, injures 22

Posted: 01 May 2012 02:10 PM PDT

KELOK SEMBILAN, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- A passenger bus caught fire in western Indonesia on early Tuesday morning, killing at least thirteen passengers and injuring nearly two dozen others, police said. The bus driver survived the blaze.

The accident happened at around 4:30 a.m. local time when the passenger bus caught fire on a road in Limapuluh Kota district near the city of Payakumbuh in West Sumatra. The passenger bus, operated by the Yanti Group Bus, was near the 30-kilometer marker of the Dumai-Solok route at the time of the accident.

The vehicle, which had departed Dumai in Riau province on Sunday evening and was going to Solok in West Sumatra, was carrying 48 people. Most of the passengers were sleeping when the fire broke out and the blaze quickly spread, causing passengers to panic as they desperately attempted to exit the bus.

The Kompas newspaper said the driver exited the bus when the fire broke out, leaving the passengers to rescue themselves. Kompas said the back door was blocked and a pile of goods and a spare tire made it difficult for the passengers to exit the vehicle. Some of the passengers were able to jump from the bus after breaking windows.

A West Sumatra police spokesman confirmed thirteen passengers were killed, including five women, three men, three boys, one girl and one infant. Another 22 people were injured, some of whom sustained serious injuries. Several Indonesian media reports later said the death toll had risen to fourteen, but authorities were unable to confirm this.

West Sumatra Police Department Public Relation chief Adjutant Chief Commander Mainar Sugiarto told Viva News that preliminary reports suggest that the fire was triggered by a short circuit in the lower part of the front door. Authorities have detained the driver of the bus, who reportedly also attempted to flee the scene.

According to official figures, road accidents kill more than 16,500 people a year in Indonesia, although the actual number is estimated to be more than 37,000. Many accidents in the country are blamed on poor maintenance and dangerous driving as police officers can often be bribed to ignore violations.

In February, fourteen people were killed and 40 others were injured when a passenger bus lost control in the province of West Java and collided head-on with another bus. The bus then hit three pick-up trucks, four passenger cars, three motorcycles, two mini-buses and an electricity pole before plunging into a five-meter (16.4 feet) deep ravine.
