Lincoln County Sheriff's Office News Release

May 9, 2012

Lincolnton, NC – Lincoln County Sheriff's deputies braved on coming traffic as they escorted an 87 year old female driver to safety.  The woman was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 321 Tuesday night around 7:30 p.m. when Deputy Mike Allred, Jr. caught up with the vehicle.

Deputy Allred activated his blue lights and siren as he traveled behind the elderly woman but was unable to get her attention.  The blue lights from Deputy Allred's patrol car and another driven by Deputy Rhyan Cauby traveling north in the northbound lanes alerted a steady flow of oncoming traffic to the wrong way driver.  Officer Causby was able to cut across an emergency lane in the median to get in front of the vehicle.   He slowed traffic in both lanes and the officers got the woman stopped just inside Catawba County at Mile Marker 30.

First Sgt. Robert Hooks, Sgt Todd Spitzer and Lt. Tim Johnson along with two Maiden Police officers arrived on the scene to assist in the incident which was turned over to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The elderly 87 year old Salisbury woman told officers she had been in Charlotte for the day and was traveling back to Salisbury and apparently got lost. It's not known how long the woman had been driving in the southbound lanes but she traveled in the wrong lane on Highway 321 for at least six miles at a speed of about 35 miles an hour but facing oncoming traffic with a speed limit of 65 miles an hour.  A check of the woman's driver's license determined that her license was revoked.

First Sgt. Hooks wrote in his report that "if it had not been for the heroic effort put forth by Deputies Allred and Causby a tragic ending may have occurred."
