Battle of Ramsour’s Mill set for May 19-20

Don’t miss the 2012 Battle of Ramsour’s Mill celebration and reenactment on May 19-20 near Lincolnton High School’s football stadium in Lincolnton. Also, there will be a  Ghost Walk at the Battle of Ramsour’s Mill site in Lincolnton on Saturday night, May 19, 2012, at 8:30 p.m. with local historian, author, and magician Dan Barefoot.

OUTSTANDING STUDENTS HONORED AT GASTON COLLEGE AWARDS BANQUET

DALLAS, NC – Thirty three outstanding Gaston College graduates were honored for academic achievement at an annual Awards Banquet held on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, in the Myers Center Cafeteria, Dallas Campus.  The banquet, sponsored by the Student Government Association, recognized students who received Gaston College divisional awards for academic achievement and leadership or North Carolina Community College System Awards.  Dr. Patricia Skinner, president of Gaston College, presented the President's Award to full-time students that maintained an overall 4.0 grade point average.

Darren Stewart, outgoing Student Government President at Gaston College, received the NC Community College System Academic Excellence Award and Golden Gavel Award.

"These are outstanding students who have set the bar at high standards," says Darren Stewart, outgoing Student Government president. "The Student Government Association and Gaston College applaud them for their dedication and commitment. We look forward to seeing them walk across the stage to receive their diplomas during the graduation commencement ceremony this evening."

The officers for the 2011-2012 Student Government Association who sponsored the banquet are as follows:  Executive Council – Darren Stewart, President; Kyera Gilliard, Vice President; Brittani Manning, Secretary; and Ioannis Drougkas, Treasurer; and Senate members Caleb Handolescu, Patrick Wood, Jaynie Dameron, and Linda Kay Grantt. The SGA advisor is Tanisha Williams.
The Gaston College Board of Trustees adopted a resolution recognizing the leadership of Mr. Stewart as the SGA president. The Board directed that the resolution be recorded in the official Minutes of the Board at their Monday, May 7, 2012, monthly meeting. 
These outstanding graduates are among the 767 students graduating this spring from Gaston College. A total of 459 students will participate in tonight's Friday, May 11 graduation commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte.
Club of the Year Award This year's Club of the Year award recipient was the Cosmetology Program's Cosmetic Art and Science Association Club (CASA). This year's CASA club collected the most food for the SGA food drive; it was later delivered to Catherine's House in Belmont, Christian Ministries of Lincoln County, and Crisis Assistance Ministries in Gastonia. The CASA collected over 1,400 items. They also worked with Amy's House in Lincolnton servicing women who have experienced domestic violence and homelessness, collected over $1,000 in new and used scarves and wigs for the American Cancer Society's "Feel Good… Look Better" program, and participated in many more activities. The Cosmetic Art and Science Association provides support for the Cosmetology Program by active recruitment, community involvement, and trade related opportunities for career enhancement via off campus activities and professional development in the salon industry. The clubs advisor is Catherine Cunningham who is also the Chair/Instructor of the Cosmetology Program located at the Gaston College Lincoln Campus in Lincolnton.

NOTE: The Dallas Herring Achievement Award was established by the North Carolina Community College System in 2010 to honor the late Dr. Dallas Herring, one of the state’s earliest advocates of community colleges. The award is bestowed annually upon a current or former student who best embodies Dr. Herring’s philosophy of “taking people where they are and carrying them as far as they can go.”
Robert W. Scott Leadership Award was established in 2004 in honor of the former Governor who served from 1969-1973, and later as President of the North Carolina Community College System from 1983-1995.  The award is bestowed on students who demonstrate leadership on a statewide level.
Learn 4 Life award is an enrichment program. The goal of the program is to encourage students to get involved in club activities, service projects, reading programs and other special activities. They are given a list of options. Each student must compete four of the options. The activities are monitored throughout the process.
NC Academic Excellence Award is awarded each spring semester to one student selected from each community college in North Carolina to honor their academic achievement. To be eligible for the award, recipients must be enrolled in a North Carolina community college, earn a cumulative grade point average of no less than 3.25, and complete at least 12 credit hours.
President's Award is presented to full-time students that maintained an overall 4.0 grade point average.
Senator of the Year is awarded for outstanding leadership and attendance.
Golden Gavel Award is when the college officially retires the outgoing SGA presidents' official gavel.
